Okay chat, but what if I put distilled caffeine into soup to make a true [Potion of Stamina]?
Lemon and Dill Chicken Soup with Spaetzle
I had a craving, so I improvised a pot of soup, and it came out so perfect I have to write down what I made.
For the soup:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large leek, washed, white and pale green part thinly sliced
1-2 cups chopped carrots
2-3 garlic cloves, finely minced
Salt and white pepper to taste
6 cups chicken broth
2 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 medium to large zucchini, roughly chopped
1 cup sweet peas
Zest and juice of one large lemon
1/4 cup fresh dill, minced
In a large pot over medium-low heat, heat the oil, then add the leeks and carrots. Cook, stirring frequently, until the leeks are wilted and turning translucent. Season with salt and pepper, then add the garlic and cook until fragrant, just a few moments.
Add the chicken broth and the whole, raw chicken breasts and allow to simmer until the chicken is cooked all the way through.
Remove the chicken, allow to cool enough to safely handle, and slice and shred, then return to the pot along with the zucchini and peas.
Allow to simmer until the zucchini reaches your desired doneness, then turn off the heat, stir in the lemon juice and zest and dill. Taste, add more salt, pepper, lemon, or dill if needed.
For the spaetzle:
2 eggs
1/4 cup whole milk
1 cup flour
Salt
Water or chicken broth
Whisk together the eggs and milk, then stir in the flour until smooth. Set aside to rest while a medium pan filled with either water or broth comes to a boil.
Lower the temp on the water to a gentle simmer.
Pass the dough through a spaetzle maker, drizzle through a slotted spoon, or drizzle little dollops into the water. When the noddles float, scoop it out of the water with a slotted spoon or into a colander to drain.
To serve the soup:
Add about 1/2 cup of spaetzle to each bowl and top with hot soup. Store leftover soup and spaetzle separate and reheat together.

Soup Witch! I love her. Maybe someday I'll write a comic about her and her hijinks.
I made potato and fennel soup today because I got fennel in my CSA share and I knew I wouldn't use it if I didn't use it immediately. It turned out pretty good. Recipe is from the Moosewood Cookbook by Mollie Katzen. It called for water as the liquid base but I am a dairy babe so I used mostly milk. I would've done half veggie broth and half milk but the only veggie broth I had was frozen solid and I didn't feel like thawing it. I garnished it with sour cream and some of the chopped up fennel leaves.
This inspired me to research the correspondences of fennel, though. It's the most unique part of this dish (take it out and you have potato and onion soup) and I'd like to honor it! I use Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs and a few other random websites to cobble together the correspondence that makes the most sense to me.

If I were to use this in a spell, I'd use it for a clear mind and good communication. Something about the smell just makes me feel very clear-headed. Combined with the grounding aspects of the potato and onion, I think it's helped me center myself. Now the act of cooking it and sitting down to eat it definitely helped too.
Fun fact: fennel is in the carrot family, called Apiaceae. Celery, dill, cumin, coriander, Queen Anne's Lace, and many other plants are in this family too! (Pulled this info from here: https://www.britannica.com/topic/list-of-plants-in-the-family-Apiaceae-2038061)
Also, licorice flavor in many plants (anise, licorice, etc) all comes from the same compound called anethole. I think they developed it as a way to fight off insects. That's usually why plants create a smell, it just so happens that we like it.
