I love that line from Michael Mann’s Heat, when Bob De Niro’s character says, “Don’t let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.” That’s the code his character utilizes so he’s able to maneuver around this world without getting caught by Al Pacino.

Aemond has a similar code that stops him from being hurt like he was as a kid. That’s why he’s able to walk out on the madam in that scene. He’s humiliated by his brother and all his crew, and it’s like this switch flips. The madam is no more. All of these people in front of him? They mean nothing. He stands up, he owns it. “Yeah, I’m bulletproof. Anything you say, it will not work.” Like you say, it’s scary."

This bridge ends up being sung by Carly Holt, your bandmate Adam Hann’s wife. How did that come to be? I think the whimsy and the naïveté in that song come from the fact that it was going to be a Drive Like I Do song. I wasn't thinking about the profundity of it, or I wasn't thinking about fitting it into a record. I was just thinking about it being quite pure and blissful. Just practically, what happened was that I didn't like that bridge. I wrote a bunch of different bridges. Michelle from Japanese Breakfast had sung on 'Part of the Band', and I remembered that moment of — I've done it a few times, but sometimes one of the revelations is, Maybe it's just the voice; it's not the part. So when Carly sang it, it was like, Okay, yeah, the part's great — just I shouldn't have been singing that. What we didn't want to do is have a feature. We hadn't really done a feature before in a 1975 album because I think that would take — well, Phoebe pops up on one of our records, but me and Phoebe kind of orbit each other: She's in our music video; I turn up and I open up for her shows. So that felt real. What wouldn’t feel real is if Bad Bunny turned up on track ten or something. We wanted to keep it in the family.

"This is the best record of the '80s. Well, actually, fucking hell … no, that is my favourite record of the '80s! The Blue Nile are my favourite band of all time. They're fucking amazing. Musically, they've inspired me so much. There's so much drama. It's perfect nighttime music. It's beautiful, romantic music with British sensibilities. The sounds on it are just amazing. And it's called Hats! What a fucking cool name for a record!"

When I heard it I thought it was from the perspective of staring death in the face. "I mean, yeah. It's not opinionated. It's stuff that's happened. It's what I was worried about. A combination of not being able to focus on one thing, and talking about my drug addiction, interspersed with the world, then me, then the world. I've always been staring death in the face. Always an existentialist, a nihilist. I just wanna have a baby now. Then I'll stop doing that." You want to have a baby now? "I'm too busy, but do you ever think that sometimes? God! Well, at least then me will go away! I'd like to become a vessel for somebody else's happiness. That's where I get meaning in life. I make music; it makes people happy. I find everything else a bit hard. I love my girlfriend." Why do you feel such an urgency to make so much music? "I don't know. Do you not feel really urgent right now? To articulate that is weird, right? I'm such a drama queen. Everybody is living their own movie, everybody is the protagonist in the world. If you're a writer, you want a great ending, right? I was obsessed: I'm gonna do three records. We've got artwork for the third. That's gonna be it." Do you feel confident that you're quitting? "Um. Yeah? But to be honest with you, one of the reasons I don't wanna talk about it is because I don't deal with change well. I move forward. If I think about it, I go backward. I've tried to distract myself. It's so hard when there's no answer as to why. Why? Because it's better. Because you should. I don't wanna have a baby because of my sense of salvation." It's okay to think that having a kid can be selfish. "Yeah. There's not much out there for them. I worry if there's really any point. Is there?" You're asking if there's a point to having kids? "Can we not? I don't wanna go down this road. Some stuff me and my missus have to iron out."

"What do I want to do? I want to make people slightly more conscientious through the things that I do, because I'm privileged enough to now kind of have a voice, to a certain extent, so maybe remembered for being a good person and having a positive impact on culture, whether it be pop culture or whatever … I have guilt and I have things that I've done that aren't very good, but I live my life, you know, I treat people as I wish to be treated … I want every interaction I have with somebody to be positive."
