Rereading sunshine & luci, and it’s hitting me in a way it didn’t the first time I read it as it was coming out. It’s so deeply impactful and emotionally dense and you do an amazing job of conveying that. Even though I knew how it ended, I had a pit building in my stomach for pages and pages. It humanizes the birds while also showing how inexcusable their actions are. It shows that sunshine’s self fulfilling prophecies were part of the parafacilities too and you really feel his stress.
The love in the chapter, the refusal to accept that some people are “too far gone” or that soemthing is “inevitable” and the encouragement of the love of life is so powerful and beautiful. I love the way they remind eachother how to live and the pain luci feels at not knowing so much about him is so sharp and real.

as for the nightmare question: basically yes! it was a prophetic dream that doubley alluded to their binding as well as sunshine swapping her death with his own. hence the blindness luci speaks of afterwards: the light (sunshine) has saved her, but left her blind. (lied to her about it).
