why such a sour face
can you stack plus cards in UNO? the answer is yes if the recipient is charanko.
Sourface has a message for Charanko, I mean, Saitama.

Bonus:
Do you have any opinion about Bang's mentorship towards Garou? Or just overall about himself as a character, both in manga and webcomic potrayal?
Hey anon! Thank you for your patience.
Basically, my opinion is that with Bang’s mentorship it’s like... Raising/teaching/mentoring people is tricky. It doesn’t matter how good you are, you’re going to screw up somewhere (as far as I can tell). I have met very few young people who don’t have at least a small amount of parental resentments.
Intro:
I don’t really think Bang can be blamed for Garou’s actions, Garou’s determination to do what he did seemed to have formed before joining Bang’s dojo. I don’t even think it would be fair to say that Bang ‘enabled’ Garou to hurt people. Bang taught Garou skills he would have learned elsewhere if not from Bang and I think Bang did everything he knew how to try to encourage Garou down a good path.
Bang’s teaching style in general:
Bang seems very ‘old school’. From the way he watched Saitama at the beginning, the way he treated Charanko, and the things Sour-face said about him, I get the impression that he is strict, has high expectations for discipline and conduct, and can be a bit authoritarian in those areas. But when it comes to applying his lessons to reality Bang seems to take a more permissive approach letting his students get their asses handed to them for the benefit of experience. The way he speaks to Genos shows that he has a calm and collected wisdom and he can indeed be encouraging to a student. (I actually kind of wish that Genos had chosen to be Bang’s disciple when Bang was attempting to recruit them. I think Bang would have had a lot to offer Genos.)
Some of the places I think he failed:
1. picking favorites
I think by picking favorites with Garou he did a disservice to himself and the other students. He’s clearly a relatively effective teacher for Garou to have learned his technique so completely (and Garou seems to be quick at picking things up as well). So I think if he had spent a little less time on Garou and a little more with Sourface, Charanko, and his other students Garou might have been able to learn a bit more humility by not being given preferential treatment. I also think Bang’s other student’s would have improved more.
2. too invested
I think he got too invested in Garou and wasn’t ready to let Garou go and make his own decision and I think that’s the primary reason he ended up burned out after the Monster Association Arc. Basically, it doesn’t matter what you’re relationship is with a person (mentor or not) at some point people will always do something you don’t agree with and you don’t get to control the outcome of their actions even if you feel responsible for them. Garou needed to go through what he went through and I think that maybe Bang’s response was less than helpful. Bang, may have saved Garou’s life (unclear) when he stopped the fight between Garou and Genos, but he never had the right to try to take Garou’s life either, and his show of disapproval pushed Garou away even faster. Maybe if Bang had provided a safe place for Garou, despite everything, Garou would have realized that it’s not just ‘him against the world’ and there could be another path? (unlikely but you can always hope) I think Bang was in many ways a father to Garou, and like most parents, he had a hard time letting go.
3. Classic old dude emotional constipation
The Guy Literally beat Charanko up rather than explain to Charanko the situation with Garou and Bang’s sense of responsibility toward Garou. I think a bit more emotional vulnerability with Garou might have given Garou the opportunity to learn a way that wasn’t only painful experience (doubtful Garou is pretty stubborn). But like a lot of people Bang seems to have a hard time saying what he means, what people mean to him, and talking about his own scars and personal difficulties. He’s not without empathy, but he’s still disappointingly bottled up. That’s how a lot of secrets and life lessons get lost to time dude. Not everyone absolutely has to learn from experience, with absolutely everything, absolutely all of the time. But that’s just my take.
Conclusion
Over all, I think Bang is a pretty cool guy, honorable, wise, experienced, but with some very common problems. I think he did the best he knew how. I think he cared very much about Garou even while he feared he might have to kill Garou. He cares a lot, and I have a hard time faulting anyone for giving a shit about something admirable.
Also, check out this neat picture I found while I was doing research for this Ask.

Bang really does look like Garou, are we sure they’re not actually related??
