My Song of the Day is ‘Sour Times’ from @portisheadmusic’s exquisite debut album ‘Dummy’. The album was released 26 years ago today (which makes me feel very old). It is a true classic album, one of the best ever in my opinion. There isn’t a bad track on it and when Portishead emerged they sounded unlike any other band. It has stood the test of time, and it was the album I listened to every night as I went to sleep during my uni years #portishead #songoftheday #classicalbum #sourtimes https://www.instagram.com/p/CEMSjmrnYFV/?igshid=fn07yrwtesvr

“I can recall exactly the moment I first heard Portishead. I was in my attic room of a shared student house whilst at university. It was late, my housemates already asleep, I was listening to the radio, mooching around my room when Glory Box came on and I paused whatever I was doing, stopped still and stood and just listened to this amazing sound coming over the airwaves. . A stunningly original blend of film noir samples and soundscapes, tripping yet delicate beats, and creative and often unnerving record scratching; Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow create an intense claustrophobic atmosphere in which Beth Gibbon’s emotional and often chilling vocals sit, usually uncomfortably, as if off-kilter and just about to tip over the edge. . This album is of course Portishead’s Mercury Music Prize winning debut from 1995. Arguably one they never bettered, though their subsequent two albums didn’t quite tread the same water but saw ongoing creative development and experimentation in sound. However, this was without doubt a milestone and gamechanger in popular music. . Credited with inventing trip-hop along with Massive Attack and Tricky, their fellow Bristolians, it’s a sound that’s now familiar and an album whose tracks have been played to death (not least on the This Life TV series, currently available again on BBC iPlayer) so it can be difficult to listen now and appreciate how startlingly original it was at the time...” .
