Movies That Matter, the Jewish Museum’s free film festival for middle and high school students, serves more than 2,000 students and their teachers each year who view award-winning documentaries and engage in post-film discussions about identity, culture, and tolerance. Following a recent screening of the film Southern Rites, we interviewed artist and filmmaker Gillian Laub on her photographs of segregated proms and how teens responded to her timely film documenting racism, inequality, and injustice in America.

GILLIAN LAUB’S SOUTHERN RITES | #ICPTALKS + BOOK SIGNING October 14, 7PM – 9PM EDT

Southern Rites is a 12-year visual study of one community’s struggle to confront longstanding issues of race and equality. In May 2009, The New York Times Magazine published a photo-essay by Gillian Laub entitled, "A Prom Divided," which documented Georgia's Montgomery County High School's racially segregated prom rituals. National outrage led the school to finally have an integrated prom for all students. Laub continued to travel to Montgomery County. "I thought I was going back to kind of show the prom in transition," she says. But she found far more than that, exposing continued racial tensions.

Documentary photographers sometimes wonder what kind of impact their work has, but Gillian Laub knows hers has inspired real change. When she started photographing proms in Mt. Vernon, Georgia, in 2002, they were segregated. There was a white prom and a black prom — only Mexicans could attend both — and two separate crowns for two separate queens.
