Personal Blog: Must Try Local Food at Southern Leyte
It's important for us to remember the history, culture, language, and other remarkable things in each region.
Southern Leyte is one of the most unique places you can go to, not only that it has the most beautiful beaches, but also has must-try local food that you can't find easily in any part of the Philippines. Here are 3 of them that you need to try!
SUMAN LATIK
Suman Latik is a sweet Filipino snack made from rice dish and caramel sauce. The ingredients are Glutinous rice, young coconut milk (Strips), White Sugar, Sesame seed, Salt (optional), Water, and Banana leaves as the packaging. There is also a version of Suman Latik which the side rice dish is paired with Bukayo (sweetened coconut strips). Price ranges from 10 pesos to 30 pesos.
2. BINAGOL
Made from Glutinous rice, kalamay or brown sugar, and taro pudding with nuts. This sweet delicacy is widely known due to its sweet taste and unique packaging. Covered by coconut shell or "Bagol" in Waray-Waray term that's why it's called Binagol. Binagol is one of the top delicacies that tourists looks in Eastern Visayas. Its price ranges from 100 pesos - 220 pesos.
3. BUCARILLOS
You might hear and about Bucayo, but Bocarillos is the Southern Leyte's version of Bucayo. It is made of coconut strips, evaporated milk, egg, sugar, and calamansi juice. Bucayo and Bocarillos are both sweets but the difference is that Bucayo uses brow sugar making it color brown while Bocarillos is lighter in color because of its ingredients. Today, Bocarillos is one of the most popular delicacies in Southern Leyte.
These are only a few of the delicacies in Southern Leyte, if you want to experience and venture more when it comes to the culture and roots of a certain region, why don't you start at Southern Leyte. I'm sure there are more adventures there!

Regardless of being used to Cebu's hundreds of accessible food, these snacks from litol food stalls here in Silago will always be something to me. P.S. these chicken squares are bomb af 🤤
I have always wanted to bring people to Silago. It has been a struggle to fully explain to them why I am so attached to this place, why I keep talking about this place, and why I keep reposting pictures from years ago. From Cebu, the travel would typically take half a day. All the more reason why it’s hard to bring in friends or workmates. From Manila, it would be costly by plane or it would take 13 (?) hours by bus. Tiring, right? I publicly post videos and pictures of Silago in hopes of attracting more visitors or tourists through social media because I want to share the beauty and serenity this place offers. Like what I say to my friends and relatives (who haven’t been here), “If you need to fully relax and unwind from all the stress in the city, let Silago be your rehab.”. I have also repeatedly talked to my cousins about different plans on how to help boost Silago’s tourism like setting up a backpacker’s hostel soon, or opening a tiki bar and cafe, or offering tour services within and outside Silago. Of course, they have all remained “just plans”. With #BagongSilago, I have grown more eager and excited for what’s gonna happen in the next months and years for my beautiful hometown. I now have more hope for a better Silago. The pictures you see about Silago only gives you a glimpse of how lovely it is. But it’s really different when you experience it firsthand – you’re gonna want to keep visiting. Thank you to my visitors last San Juan for allowing me to show you around Silago. I am happy you loved it here. Puhon napud, you are always welcome here ❤️ Silago, my piece of heaven here on Earth. 🍃🌊 (
