Folks of South Minneapolis, I'd like to introduce you to my latest interior mural ❤️ Painted at @funkygrits on 38th and Chicago. Featuring some of the most wonderful women coming out of the South Minneapolis area - (in order from left to right) accomplished artist and teacher Leslie Barlow, Victoria Lauing of the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center, Hennepin County Commissioner Angela Conley, City Council Member Andrea Jenkins, former Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton, and a lovely young woman named Josephine Brewington. Hey y'all! Having my latest interior mural reveal happening with the @funkygrits crew tomorrow at 12, so stop on through! Also, take some time to read the following info about our mural theme, courtesy of Robyne Robinson with @fivexfivepublicartconsultants . . . Minneapolis, MN -- A new mural honoring the Central Neighborhood is a first: recognizing CIS-gendered women, the lesbian community, and transgender women who have helped shape the history of the south Minneapolis district. The 4’ x 30’ mural, was created by Minneapolis illustrator Reggie LeFlore. It features the images of former Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton, who grew up in Central; and both Hennepin County Commissioner Angela Conley and City Council VP Andrea Jenkins who live in and represent the ward. Also featured: community activist Victoria Lauing of Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center, and noted artist Leslie Barlow. The unveiling will take place at Funky Grits Restaurant, which opened last fall in the heart of Central on 38th and Chicago Avenue South. Owner Jared Brewington worked with fiveXfive Public Art Consultants to commission the mural. "I thought it was important to incorporate a community-inspired work of art within the space," said Brewington, who grew up in Central. "Through public policy, the arts, social justice and youthful optimism these women embody the resiliency, creativity, culture and hope of our historic community."
