where should i start with Merzbow?

Merzbow has a lot of entry points based on the different eras he’s gone through, and it mostly depends on how familiar you are with noise music and harsh noise itself. My general universal recommendation is Uzu Me Ku, Merzbeat, and Merzbient (Yes, all 12 discs). But there’s also the insane number of collabs which I find is also a decent starting point. For Sludge/Doom noise check out Boris & Merzbow’s Rock Dream or Sun Baked Snow Cave (personal recommendation, but no link), for grindcore, Merzbow & Full of Hell. For those more familiar with noise or harsh experimental music, you could probably look into a bit more of his harsher works like: Music for a Bondage Performance, A Taste Of..., Normal Music (Remastered), 1930. The 13 Japanese Birds Series, and finally the daunting Merzbox. This artist has so much more work than what I’m listing here, however these albums are solid, easy to find, and for the most part fairly introductory to the prolific Japanese noise musician that is known as Merzbow.

Ah man. There’s so much depth. It’s like what Kanye did with Yeezus. I can’t wait for the full album. I saw his 45 min set at the Governors Ball, and that was dope. I get to see him & the Voidz again in November. But yeah there’s a lot to absorb from human sadness, I like this new direction.
