Space Fence Behind the Scenes Construction Story

   The Lockheed Space Fence project was so remote that in order to get supplies and building materials to the location, it took at least 2 months in transept.  This project was constructed on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands which is in the South Pacific about 7000 miles from Florida, where Nationwide Consulting LLC (our company) and the division of Lockheed Martin we were representing were located.

It was there that we built a billion dollar radar.  We will let Lockheed Martin explain the project here in this video, they build radar, we build buildings! The logistics involved were unbelievable, containers needed to be loaded in order, than put on large container ships timed to arrive in Guam at the same time, transfer to smaller shit and then to Kwajalein.

In the blockbuster film “Gravity,” astronauts became stranded, floating in orbit after “space junk” -- debris left floating in space after 60 years of human space exploration -- hit their mission at a heart-racing speed. While the film is more science fiction than fact, there are huge concerns about all the debris in the Earth’s orbit -- an estimated 500,000 pieces -- and how that could affect satellite systems.

The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a hearing Friday on how to monitor and reduce the space junk. The Air Force is expected to award a contract in the next few weeks for a new “space fence.” The fence isn’t really a fence -- it’s a radar system that projects a wall of energy into space to track all the bits of junk floating around. 

Another concern is getting rid of all the junk in space. But as Brian Weeden, an expert on space junk and technical adviser with the Secure World Foundation, told Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson, it isn’t easy:

"It's really challenging when you start thinking about removing things from space. You can imagine a city bus that has been undergoing extreme heat and cold changes for decades also being imposed with hard radiation, and it's probably very fragile and brittle. And it's got a bunch of explosive fuel in it, and it's spinning... Now, go grab it. And by the way, there are hundreds of those. So on one hand it's a very difficult engineering problem, but they're making some progress on some ideas. It's not going to be possible to remove it all."
