In studio space, the project assigned was to construct a 1:1 scale, using only paper and tape, of a machine in the workshop of our choice. We choose the 7 foot monster. The goal of this project was not to build a machine, but to develop a sculpture with figurative similarities. One would describe this piece as massive, dense, heavy and powerful. The trait of power derives from its size and its implied motion focal point. This focal point is located near the center where the saw would be present. The implied motion is communicated to the viewer by the spiral tape wrapped around the paper shaped pole. Understanding the structural properties of the media was the biggest obstacle to overcome and this team came out on top.

Brief Overview (9/8/15)

Today in class we did a group exercise called “20ft”, which required us to “define” 20ft. Each group had their own unique ways of representing the 20ft; my group in particular measured it with paper towel, the number of steps we took (around 8 to 10 steps) as well as how many cars we’d be able to fit in a parking space that size. 

An example of what another group did was measure it by movement by simply measuring 20ft and throwing keys said distance. 

Needless to say it was an interesting day in class.

Critique #3

This critique was extremely long. There was a lot of repetition and nothing that was really helpful beyond that of what you or Matt had mentioned. Everyone works in a certain way and it may be something that appeals to others or it may not. If someone doesn’t talk about anyone else’s work and then gets offended when people talk about their work, is not my problem. Simply because I have no interest in your work does not mean that I don’t like you as a person and I think that it should be mentioned that we are talking about the work and not the people. Matt had mentioned during my printmaking class that I didn’t like a work because I had something against the person’s ambitions and that is absolutely not the case. I had no interest in the work because of their lack of attention to detail which is perfectly ok since that is the style the artist works in, simply doesn’t match up with mine. I thought the same 5 people talked, and I was one of them. If we didn’t talk no one would and we would’ve been there forever. I have no interest in what the artist has to say about their own work and that needs to stop, write a paragraph if you want people to know about your work don’t talk for 10 minutes and take up time when you weren’t supposed to talk in the first place. Nevertheless, I felt everyone worked quite hard on their works and they looked put together and not at the last minute which was a wonderful thing because I was able to take the pieces seriously. The project was very interesting and I think projects like that should be done more often, it allows me personally to break my attachment to my works which is kind of a problem.

Critique #1

At first I really thought working it groups was going to be a disaster. Thankfully my group worked very well together and ended up with a well-executed piece. I was very happy with the final product [pictures in another post].

For the first critique I’m quite glad that it went smoothly and most students did not just say “Oh, I like this”, “Ugh, this isn’t something I like”, there was actual foundation for what they were attracted to and what they weren’t. I think that pieces that were most successful were planed and ones that failed [for a lack of a better word, because I know that was your intention] could have been constructed in a way that was sturdy similar to what we did with the base [it was a pizza underneath but a paper covered the top as to not change the “look” of the saw]. I did not appreciate people’s responses regarding the piece which was on the floor, I felt that the group talked ALL CLASS LONG about irrelevant things and not saying I don’t talk but not as loud as I know they were talking about shitting, that’s probably why their piece failed and was not executed well.

On a brighter note, each student was able to communicate at least one time, which was a change, and one person didn’t really dominate the entire critique. Overall, I think critique went smoothly and projects were well done [most were] and the different approaches were clear and the idea of weight without weight is still mind boggling to me.
