SPACE VOYAGER

_en This spring, a photo of a white Old Skool with a NASA branding on the outer side took over all media and social networks. The interest and speculations that this caused probably surpassed all expectations. The whole thing resulted in a great capsule collection, which, despite featuring a hundred NASA signs, is not an official NASA collaboration.

Vans sneakers inspired by space flights were made famous predominantly by Sole Classics from Columbus. Several years ago, they created a perfect Sk8-Hi that matched a space suit and paid respect to Armstrong, the first man on the Moon. This year, we’re finally seeing something more widely available from Vans and NASA.

This collection of Vans and NASA pays homage to sixty years of space exploration. To be specific, it commemorates the Voyager 1 and 2 programs and the Apollo 11 mission. The patches and motives of these events can be found on both the shoes and apparel. Even though this is not an official collaboration, everything on the products indicates the opposite.

Let’s start with the apparel and accessories. The collection includes a white backpack and a bold orange duffel bag. In addition to that, there are two coach jackets in white and blue with a NASA logo in front and the Apollo or EVA branding on the back. The EVA branding/insignia is actually an update of DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man wearing a space suit. It’s used for missions in the open space outside of a spaceship. The black-orange jacket is also great as it matches both the duffel bag and the Old Skool, which we will talk about later. The collection also features a hoodie with a Voyager program branding and a white longs sleeve with the EVA insignia on the back.

Regarding footwear, probably the hottest pieces are the white and orange leather Old Skools featuring a US flag patch on the heel. They also include a ‘SHUTTLE’ sign and a metal eyelet. Also, the foxing around the sole is visually similar to moon boots, the shoes specifically designed for walking on the moon. A NASA sign is on the outer side over the sidestripe, which is stitched with the same cotton. On the inner side of the sole, there is an almost invisible sign ‘FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL’. Apart from that, the visible foaming around the ankle is also an interesting element. It disrupts the material and colour structure of the shoe pretty well. The Sk8-Hi model in the DX MTE execution is similar in terms of foaming in both the white and black versions. The foaming is also visible on the side under the sidestripe. The shoe’s material is premium leather and the sole is a reversed ‘winter’ waffle with the moon boots-like foxing again. There is a large patch panel on the tongue with a Vans logo on. The inner and left outer patch are firmly stitched to the shoe. The second version, but in the women’s sizing, is the white canvas Sk8-Hi MTE with a black tip and sole. They also include a red inside and a stitched NASA patch on the outer sides. The last product is the Slip-On with a space print and NASA sign on the heel.

I think that the collection is well made as a whole. The only setback is the slightly odd ‘NASA – nonNASA’ communication from Vans, but the product itself helps us to get over it. Even though some pieces sold out on the release day on November 2, the rest of the collection is still available at Foosthop.

_cz Na jaře letošního roku obletěla všechny média a sociální sítě fotka bílých oldskoolů s NASA brandingem na vnější straně. Rozruch a spekulace, který tenhle leak rozvířil, předčil asi všechny očekávání. Nakonec z toho vypadla skvělá capsule kolekce, která, ač má na sobě 100x napsáno NASA, tak oficiálně NASA collabem není.

Vansky inspirované lety do vesmíru asi nejvíce proslavila parta z obchodu Sole Classics z Columbusu. Před několika lety představili naprosto dokonalé Sk8-Hi, které matchovaly ke skafandru a vzdávaly hold Armstrongovi, prvnímu člověku na Měsíci. Letos jsme se konečně dočkali i daleko dostupnější spolupráce, která je přímo mezi Vansem a NASA.

Spolupráce mezi Vans a NASA vzdává hold šedesáti rokům zkoumání vesmíru. Konkrétně jde o programy Voyager 1 a 2 a misi Apollo 11, jejichž patche a motivy najdete jak na botách, tak apparelu. Ač se oficiálně o collabo nakonec nejedná, tak produkty nesou všechny jeho náležitosti.

Začněme apparelem a doplňky. Kolekce obsahuje jeden bílý basic backpack a výrazný oranžový duffel bag. Pak taky dvě coach jackets v bílé a modré barvě s NASA logem vpředu a Apollo či EVA brandingem na zádech. EVA branding / insignie je vlastně update DaVinciho člověka v pohybu, akorát je ve skafandru. Používá se pro mise v otevřeném vesmíru mimo loď. Skvělý je černo-oranžový anorak, který matchuje s duffelem a old skoolami, o nichž si řekneme později. Dále je v kolekci jedna hoodie, která nese branding Voyager programu a bílý longsleeve s EVA insignia na zádech.

Co se footwearu týká, asi nejvíce hot jsou bílé a oranžové Old Skooly z kůže. Na jejich patě je jako patch americká vlajka. Na jazyku mají nápis „SHUTTLE“ a kovové očko. Jinak foxing kolem podrážky vizuálně připomíná „moon boots“, tedy boty určené k pohybu na měsíci. Přes jen obšitou linku sidestripu je na vnější straně nápis NASA. Na vnitřní straně podrážky je téměř neviditelný nápis „FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL“. Jinak dost zajímavým prvkem je viditelný foaming kolem kotníku, který velmi dobře narušuju materiálovou a barevnou strukturu boty. Model Sk8-Hi v provedení DX MTE je na tom s foamingem podobně u bílé i černé barvy a má ho navíc viditelný ještě na boční straně pod sidestripem. Materiál je premium leather a podrážka je obrácená „zimní“ waffle opět s „moon boots“ foxingem. Na jazyku je celkem velký panel na patche, na kterém je logo Vans. Na pravém kotníku je pak podle colorwaye vyměnitelný patch Apollo 11 nebo Voyager. Vnitřní a levý vnější patch jsou pak napevno přišité. Druhou variantou, ale v dámských velikostech, jsou Sk8-Hi MTE z bílého canvasu s černou špičkou a podrážkou. Mají kontrastní červený vnitřek a přišitý NASA patch z vnějších stran. Posledním produktem jsou Slip-Ony s vesmírným printem a NASA nápisem na patách.

Myslím, že kolekce se jako celek povedla. Jediný, co je škoda, je trochu zvláštní „NASA – neNASA“ komunikace ze strany Vansu, ale produkt samotný to lehce přebíjí. A ač se pár kousků vyprodalo hned v den releasu, 2. listopadu, pořád je ještě zbytek kolekce k dostání na Footshopu.
