spacecadetbird said: That’s nothing, rollers, their namesake, are actually having seizures mid air, if bred incorrectly they seize all the way to the ground. There’s also tumblers, ones who try to take off they seize. There are a lot of horrific breeds.
....Alright. How do we stop these bastards? Where are they. I will kick their asses.
So there's this group on facebook that condones things like housing conures with budgies, I told them the dangers quite tactfully and was told I was being rude and criticizing. I'm honestly so exhausted with this one group, it's so hard keeping my cool while trying to tell people things that they need to change, especially when they actually ask for advice, I'm overpowered by people who say the most outlandish kind of bullshit, saying that birds grow extra feathers if they're cold????
their internal clock if you will, located in the pineal gland, allows birds to monitor light through their eyes (less daylight during winter) to tell their bodies to drop feathers and grow stronger, more effective ones right before winter to stay warm, some species grow extra feathers during the winter (typical in birds who live in colder climates and stay throughout the winter) but they don’t just randomly sprout feathers when they’re cold.
But yeah if they’re a facebook group they’re not going to be open to changing, that would make them look bad. Sounds like the only thing they’re going to care about is maintaining their social status and followers regardless of the harm they can be doing. When people are so prideful that they won’t even begin to listen there’s not much you can do. You could try warning people about that facebook group to prevent others from believing their false information, but you likely won’t be able to make them lower their sense of pride.
You're so into the correct treatment of animals but you reblogged the video of the dog having an asthma attack in a cemetery. I don't mean to sound judgemental or anything, but there have been plenty of times it's been said that what those people are doing to that wolf dog is abuse and horrendous to get a few minutes of internet fame.
I really didn’t know about it. You can’t assume all people all over knows this. I will search for a source where they say that the video is fake and they’re abusing the dog. Thanks for letting me know. I’ve seen my cats greaving so that’s why I never thought it was an animal abuse video.
I am so worried about aspergillosis, I have mold under my sink right now that I haven't been able to take care of because my landlord doesn't know about the other pets I have, not to mention my place is a disaster. In the mean time I have an air filter and it's on 24/7, higher if I'm doing some work to clean stuff up. Do you know if it's something her vet can test for ahead of time? I do weigh her once or twice a week and monitor her very closely since she got sick once before from eating metal.
It's hard to diagnose because the symptoms are very similar to so many other illnesses. They can take samples and culture it to confirm a diagnosis but the tests are not always accurate.
This site does a pretty good analysis of Aspergillosis
I'm trying to talk to people who don't know the first thing about birds who own birds, these people are so stupid and so unwilling to learn, how do I deal with this? I get so goddamn angry with these fucking people, their ignorance is so unbelievably infuriating.
People don't know everything, avian behaviour can be complicated for those who've never dealt with it before. What seems happy and excited to them may be quite the opposite to us, you can't force someone to learn something if they aren't willing to listen. All we can do is give them the resources necessary to educate and hope they take the steps required to learn.
It's frustrating, I know, animals get hurt, people can be ignorant, but there's only so much we can do before the ball ends up in their court and it's their turn to participate and swing.
All we can do is keep level headed about it, we have facts, evidence, and knowledgable resources to support what we have to say, some people are willing to accept that, others are not.
As soon as we lose our tempers we lose.
Yelling at them, telling them that they're ignorant or stupid won't get anyone anywhere and it's just going to make them refuse anything you have to say. Some people just don't change and it sucks, I know, it hurts like hell to know there's nothing you can do about it but sometimes we have to back down if we ever want them to learn.
The people who don't know but are willing to change and learn, those are the people we focus on for now, those are the people we can change, those are the ones that are going to make a difference. Not everyone's willing to change that easily, sometimes it's best just to make your point, support it, give them the chance to learn and leave it at that, from that point on it's up to them to make the change.
spacecadetbird replied to your post: There’s a gif going around of a budgie...
I was really uncomfortable about it at first too, especially the first part where the bird opens her beak like defensively?? Someone pointed out that if the bird really didn’t enjoy it she would at least be struggling?
Looks like thepacificparrotlet covered this way better than I ever could in these posts:

Please check out the posts if you have questions. I back up the info she's given 100%. I think sometimes it's easy to misinterpret bird body language (hey even I still do sometimes) because it's so different from our own. Handling the bird with tongs like that is just really disrespectful and negligent, so it just kinda sucks to see that gif getting spread around.
