Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo neergestort tijdens testvlucht

Het commerciële ruimtevliegtuig SpaceShipTwo van Virgin Galactic is vandaag tijdens een testvlucht boven de Mojave-woestijn in Californië neergestort. Een van de twee piloten is omgekomen.  Dat stellen de autoriteiten van Californië. De andere piloot heeft ernstige verwondingen.

Virgin Galactic sprak aanvankelijk van een “ernstige afwijking tijdens de vlucht”, maar stelt nu SpaceShipTwo te zijn verloren. Hieronder de tweet waarmee Virgin Galactiv die ‘ernstige afwijking’ meldde.

De lokale politie spreekt volgens de BBC van een crash nabij Cantil. De Britse omroep toont ook een foto van vermeende wrakstukken. Het was de eerste aangedreven testvlucht sinds januari. Virgin Galactic is de ruimtevaarttak van het bedrijf Virgin Group van Richard Branson. De Britse miljardair wil commerciële vluchten naar de ruimte aanbieden. Voor dergelijke vluchten is interesse: tientallen mensen hebben zich al ingetekend voor een ruimtevlucht, ondanks het prijskaartje: meer dan 200 duizend dollar.

SpaceShipTwo, bedoeld voor ruimtetoeristen, is achttien meter lang en biedt ruimte aan twee bemanningsleden en zes passagiers. Het ruimtevliegtuig wordt eerst door een ander vliegtuig naar grote hoogte gebracht. Daarna ontsteekt het toestel zijn raketmotoren om te stijgen naar een hoogte van 110 kilometer. Het is de bedoeling dat reizigers daardoor enkele minuten gewichtloos zijn en de kromming van de aarde kunnen zien. Bron: NU.nl + Universe Today.

Virgin Galactic and LEGO Ideas Go Together Like Paul and Storm
