I know most of you aren't here for my Legend of Korra villain feelings in 2024, but ... lol oh well. I took a break from my dissertation yesterday to write six pages of meta about LOK's main villains and why I think LOK is better for them despite its flaws and frequently uneven execution.

This had always been a show that, for all the centrist trappings, was willing to transform its own setting. It might tapdance around this in awkward ways, like with the offscreen transition to an elected non-bender president, there might be unpleasant side effects like the spirit vines in Republic City, the more drastic changes might be unpredictable or frightening for the characters, and people don’t always know what the political changes they advocate will lead to, as with Zaheer inadvertently setting up the conditions for Kuvira's rise. But I think the overall arc of the show is one of broad and sometimes drastic social change towards a better world.

the tl;dr is I am okay and getting better but life has been A Lot lately.

Jester

Jester is too small. Too lightweight. Too weird in her jerry-rigged old combat mech — decommissioned, thankfully — that flirts with the regulations for the sacred game. She might be able to score a three pointer, or even a five pointer, but there was absolutely no way she’d ever be able to hit a thirteen, never mind a twentington, making her useless on the wangball field. So why was she out there for every game?

That was a question head coach Billings of the Dubauer Prowlers asked himself every time he fielded her. There was the fact that she’d come in as a package deal with Dancing Queen, their new star draft pick. If they wanted her, they had to take Jester as well. That had been the one thing she wouldn’t budge on. She needed her, she'd said. He still couldn’t quite understand why a superstar in the making wanted… that on her team, but he’d figured he’d be able to find some way around it, given time.

Unfortunately and more importantly at this late point in the season, he’d been assured by more than one of their own loyal supporters and even his players that if he benched Jester or gods forbid kicked her off the team, very bad things would happen to him, personally. So before every game, Billings grit his teeth, closed his eyes, prayed, and aimed the team’s chaos gremlin in the only somewhat safe direction: at the opposing team.

Wildbow wordcounts

How wordy has Wildbow gotten over time? Well...

X axis is "chapter number", i.e a number that starts at 1 with the first chapter of Worm and increases by 1 every new chapter without resetting with new serials. The glow-worm chapters are, for not-very-important technical reasons, counted as happening in between the first and second chapters of Ward. Yes that's silly, no it doesn't really matter that much so I didn't bother to fix it. The Pale chapters with wordcounts near the bottom are the image-only bonus material, which I did not try to OCR (much less transcribe by hand, since I haven't read Pale yet and that seems like an inevitable way to get spoiled on important things. also doing things by hand is boring). Wordcounts are slightly imprecise because they include things like the previous and next chapter links; I did not bother to remove those because you cannot see the difference anyway, but if I later publish summary statistics and they're a bit different than those you find elsewhere that's probably why.

Absolutely. That's easy-peasy.

I would like to come to your house and spend an hour with you, and then spend a minute answering these questions. (You may get multiple people to ask the same question to make sure I don't just answer the same way every time.)

During that time, you can subject me to any test, any kind of examination. The only thing I ask is that there be some purpose in it -- that I am not just sitting there doing nothing because you want to see what I can or can't do. (We can agree on the details.)

If I fail the test, then you get to taunt me about it and you get to be like "hey, if you're so smart why don't you come visit me at my house so I can try to make you look dumb, huh." This will have the obvious downside that then I get to taunt you that you failed the test (and I get to brag that I failed it on purpose to see how you would react, which is my specialty). (I'm totally kidding about this last part, but it's fun to say.)
