60 years ago... NASA astronaut Alan Shepard and “ Freedom 7 “ May 5, 1961 Mercury Seven astronaut, Naval aviator Alan Bartlett Shepard made a sub-orbital spaceflight onboard the one man Mercury Redstone 3 capsule nicknamed “Freedom 7″. The capsule reached an altitude of 188 kilometers before splash-down in the North Atlantic Ocean. After a 15 minutes flight, Alan Shepard, who didn’t wear a wristwatch on this flight, and his capsule were recovered by USS Lake Champlain. In January 1971, Shepard flew again as Commander of Apollo 14, during which he stayed 33 hours on the Moon, performing 9 hours 22 minutes of lunar spacewalk together with Edgar Mitchell.
