Jon is watching him, and Martin feels just a bit too perceived when he looks at the cup in Jon’s hand, which is the same two-toned grey as Martin’s own.
“Um,” Martin starts eloquently.
“Can you see any?” Jon asks, painfully soft. “Colors, I mean.”
Martin scans the street across from the station. Grey buildings against a grey sky, jutting up from grey concrete, framing groups of people in all shapes and sizes but only one variation of the same color in different shades of light and dark.
“No.” Martin answers. “It’s all just…”
His breath fogs in the air with his words. It feels like he just missed a step going down the stairs, or like all of his organs made a unanimous decision to shift a millimeter to the left. His tongue is sandpaper in his mouth. But he laughs, only in name.
“This is not what I had in mind when I said I liked retro aesthetics.”
Jon doesn’t laugh. Martin kind of hoped he would, because it was an objectively funny thing to say. And because laughing is easier than thinking about what it really means.
“Martin – when did…?”
“I don’t know.” Martin looks down at his tea, staring, willing it to bleed into color in front of his eyes. “I don’t know.”
Or: The Lonely temporarily leaves Martin colorblind. Martin doesn't think it's that big of a deal, until it is. Safehouse fic with colors as a central motif.
