NASA Musings

So the other day I was carrying on a conversation on why NASA wouldn't use an idea such as an orbital space station (think Star Trek but of course more primitive in its technology) where they could build space ships at. The conversation went on about how it would solve the hassle and fuel needed to get out of Earth's gravity and into space. Of course the discussion then went into how NASA is always having their funding cut and how barely anyone puts importance into the space program anymore. I personally think that it is utterly ridiculous that NASA is shoved so far on the back burner - the world's missing out on all the technology, innovation and shear scientific discovery that comes with the exploration of space. I mean look at all the technology that was achieved from the beginning of space program - massive amounts of the technology we see and are used to in everyday life have their origins from the scientist at NASA! My own thoughts on a orbital space station and/or just an orbital ship yard included the possibility that instead of spending the time to make it easier to get into space they could spend that time and energy not to mention funding on actually advancing traveling through space. Perhaps it would make it easier and quicker to get to other planets. Perhaps it would jump start a scientific discovery of the likes we've only seen in science fiction. We could have and orbital ship yard on the moon and with the moons gravity being so much lower than Earth's if production is need in the surface it would be far easier than on the Earth. Of course I have no idea on the funding of such an endeavor or even if it would be far more expensive to have orbital stations/shipyards and neither do I have a good deal of knowledge on the effect of having a station orbit the moon or even having production/processing on the moon. I'm sure the scientists at NASA have thought of something similar to this idea if not the idea in general - I just happen to believe that between funding and bureaucracy they've been stonewalled. Then again there might be a really good scientific reason for not doing so - I'm not a astrophysicist or even a physicist in general and while I love space and astronomy as a hobby I'm in no way a professional with its knowledge. Still, it's be cool to see. -BR

New song from Strand of Oaks

Strand of Oaks, aka Timothy Showalter, has recently released a second track from his upcoming album Dark Shores (the first being Spacestations from Weathevane Music's Shaking Through series). The new track is entitled Maureen's and will be far more familiar-sounding to fans of his first two albums than Spacestations, which was quite a departure from his signature sound. I'm getting serious Jason Molina vibes from it, which can only be a good thing.
