That Hideous Strength
This is neither a well-written nor fast-paced book. It is a very windbaggy, bloviating, pompous book that abuses a thesaurus. It takes ages for the plot to really go anywhere and frankly seeing Merlin is kind of the only thing that makes you want to read and finish the book.
Like, the message is important: The rich, powerful and corrupt will use the veil of science and progress to justify horrific eugenics, spread social discord, justify absolutely immoral policy, and make the world worse for everyone but them, and they're usually very mentally disturbed and toxic people with very solipsistic views of the world.
But I'm gonna be honest, Lewis in this book writes in such a pretentious way I couldn't even catch that Jane became a Christian! Or what the angels were doing in the mansion where Ransom and Legros resided.
Tolkein was right to call this "That Hideous Book"! Lewis has strong good points about authoritarianism, eugenics, and malicious scientific progress without concern for people!
But he needed an editor to make this book legible.
(Also I really couldn't differentiate many of the characters apart after a point.)
