INTERVIEW WITH DJ WEB SPINNA FROM ONE SOUND BORDER!
Greetings Addicts!
Today we have an interview with one of our favorite and hardest working DJ's in Milwaukee - DJ Web Spinna! He spins hip-hop, reggae, r&b and pretty much anything you can think of! He is highly under-rated in the scene most likely due to politics, not humbleness, skill or knowing his business. He is also an interesting character, not a bland and wack dude, have a drink with him and pick his brain, you will learn something! We got a few minutes of his time for him to tell more about himself! So sit back and get to know DJ Web Spinna and don't forget to contact him for your next event! Do What You Desire...
---INTERVIEW
What's the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe yourself as an DJ?
In all honesty I would probably end up just staring at someone who asked me that question. I mean how does one describe something that fundamental to their existence. Its not like a job description. So im sure it would take a while for me to collect process and compact the infinite experience of myself as a dj to be able to begin to answer a question such as that one. But given enough time I suppose that the first thing I would say would be.. Im an explorer. Djing stopped being a proffession a long time ago. Its what I do with my life.. Its one of those facets that ive chosen to explore my creativity and learn about the world im living in.
How long have you been in the industry?
Well in all reality.. Since I was a child. I started musical instruments when I was young. Piano in 3rd grade . Drums in 7th. I had a record player and records when I was 4. Numerous walkmans cd players and mp3 players. I would always take about an hour to make sure whatever cd I was burning had the right songs the right flow the right order the right mood. I tell you this because I realized after a few years of having the decks and the records that my whole life I had been practicing and training to be a DJ. Through listening to processing collecting and arranging music I was a DJ in training from the start. I've had my equipment for almost 6 years now.. Bought my first decks and mixer the end of summer 2005. I’ve been pursing djing as my career since the fall of 09. So pick whatever answer makes you feel good. lol
How did you get started?
Again id been a music lover since childhood so picking up instruments constantly listening to music and working with it is how I got started. But in a more immediate sense.. I started in the summer of 2005. I had always thought that Djs were cool. The way they manipulated records.. The way they pushed parties the way they mixed and scratched just everything about Djs seemed so cool. So the summer of 2005 I was working at a summer program in the administrative office, and they were in desperate need of some organization. So my co-worker and I literally worked 14 hour days developing the administrative assisting portion of that summer program,.. Plenty over time and plenty money. I had more than I knew what to do with so I decided I was gonna treat myself. It came down to buying either a keyboard as I was into beat making at the time as well. Or the turntables. After some thought I decided that if I didn’t get those turntables then I was probably never going to get them. Cause I would have family work school whatever something was always going to take my money from me but I was given the opportunity and siezed it. I started out with two turtnables a simple mixer and 10 records.. And I never looked back… Where are you from originally?
I was born in Nicaragua. I grew up for several years in an orphanage and was adopted when I was about 2 and half. I then came to Milwaukee were I've spent the majority of my life. Do you have any projects out now?
Most of my work is done Live. I have worked on some tracks with various artists independently and I have some small projects on my own but nothing as a collection yet. However I do DJ for a show called Undiscovered 95.9 kiss fm that plays Wisconsin musical talent. I also tour with amplified underground which is a hip hop tour in Wisconsin. I am the CEO of One Sound Border Sound System which is a huge project that will take a lifetime to realize. I'm also an author working on a book with a good friend of mine. We are calling the book city of cinder, I make music for the stories too. Do you have anything special as far as shows or events coming up in the future?
I'm always doing shows it would be impractical for me to list them. Special though? Anything that involves a mix of music and people dancing.. What inspires your DJ'ing?
It's what I was created for. I was destined to love music and she was destined to love me. My love for music sound discovery and knowledge inspire me to DJ. To find that combination of songs that creates peace happiness and harmony in the universe.. Or a jumpin ass party.. But isn’t that the same really anyway?
What artists/DJ's in the industry inspire you the most today? Why is that?
Ive actually made a very strong effort to grow naturally and independently from the influence of other DJ’s. I avoided tutorials and videos on you tube like the plague cause I wanted to learn how to do everything like the pioneers learned to, through trial and error and divine inspiration.. Or just dumb luck lol. However there are a few Djs who have seeped into my conscious appreciation. The first is Mike Carlson the owner of MC Audio in Madison, my birthplace as a DJ. He's been good to me and I have nothing but love and respect for that man. DJ Z-trip is probably the DJ who I first wanted to be like because he was so eclectic that he could play anything and make it sound good and that’s what I wanted to do with my life.. Play anything and everything and make it sound good. DJ Kid Cut Up here in Milwaukee has been really good to me and I really respect him as one of the best. DJ Rick Jules also kicks a lot of knowledge with me and hes so humble and genuinely enjoys the life hes living. DJ Bizzon here in Milwaukee and I are close friends I admire his drive and his skill and we go way back so naturally I like him as one of my best friends. DJ rectangle I got to hang with him only for 2 nights but.. It was cool to be around a pillar of hip hop history.
What makes you different from other DJ's today?
LOL what makes me different? Have you seen or talked to me AT ALL? I’m out there!!! I’m like the DR Who of music. Cause I see music as space time and one-dimensional adventures. I'm giant nerd by the way .. Which isn’t exclusive to me as a DJ just part of who I am. I don’t know what makes me different.. Why don’t you tell me what makes me different cause I really could care less about being the same of different. What do you want your fans to know about you?
That I'm happy.. I'm a human. Beautifully flawed at times but strong intelligent and well intended. That I love each and every one of them. And that I’m glad we connect through the music. Where can we find your mixes at? Any websites?
Reverbnation.com/djwebspinna - I Got some videos up on you tube. DJ Web Spinna.. Contact me I'll get you something.
Any shout outs you want to give?
I dislike shout outs.. Someone always feels left out. Those people who I appreciate, they know.. Those who I don’t also know. I'll shout them out when the time and place is right.
