Plant of the Day
Monday 19 July 2021
In the shade of the jumble of other plants in my front garden the distinctive flowers of Arisaema candidissimum (white-spathed jack in the pulpit, striped cobra lily) have appeared. The flowers of this tuberous perennial are surprisingly sweetly scented. I like the large trifoliate leaves that appear with or after the flower.

Arisaema triphyllum aka Jack-In-The-Pulpit or Bog Onion! Very funky plant that came out early spring this year, got to see tons of it in the marshy bits of property at my grandparents cottage. The type of flower it has is particularly unique and is called a spadix, which is what flowers such as anthuriums and peace lilies are as well. The roots were traditionally peeled, cooked, and eaten by indigenous folks, however in their raw state they contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause painful irritation when touched.
