TODAY'S FACT IS

Did you know that the Convict Caterpillar (Xanthopastis regnatrix) is also called the Spanish Moth? They are typically found in the southeastern US but do occasionally meander past their normal habitat north, west, and northwest. A different but realted species, X. Timais, used to be considered the same as this one even though their ranges never overlapped. The caterpillar gets its name from its black and white stripes, like an old prison jumpsuit.

What a beauty! And I agree, they are certainly one of the more fashionable moths in the US, although we have many. I'm just partial to pink bugs. Their caterpillars are also fashionable!
