Sparge-O-Matic - DIY Sparge System Build
For ages I’ve been sparging with a kitchen bowl with holes in with layers of tin foil so I thought it was time to up my game. This system worked okay but I didn't really get a good distribution of water over the surface of the grain. So for minimum cost (as always), I put together the design for my Sparge-O-Matic MKII. You can see the initial concept on the note pad, lol.
Anyway I have a wood shed full of reclaimed bits and found that an old kids chair fitted together quite nicely over my insulating mash tun, I worked from there with some leftover flooring then fitted pipework beneath using overflow pipe which is dead cheap from the DIY store. I put the holes in by heating up a dowel and melting them in as I didnt have a small enough drill bit. This did give okay distribution but I might work to improve this at a later date.
Once I’d screwed in the pipe clips I noticed the screws were sticking out of the top, bit unsafe, so I found an old bit of white foamex and stuck that on the top. I was originally going to have two funnels but because I cut one wrong I ended up with one, which actually once piped up worked better anyway. I reduced the flow and also capped off the pipework with wine bottle tops which I had going spare, they fit a treat. So now once the heated water is added to the funnel it drains slow enough that the water drips gently over the grain bed. It make the process very easy and quite fun and seems to do the trick. I need to brew of few more beers to check efficiency by it’s looking pretty good for the English Ale I’ve got fermenting at the moment. I tasted the grain as well once I’d done and it seemed pretty much devoid of sweetness. So for a few quid and a bit of upcycling I’m very happy with my new bit of kit, plus it comes apart and folds down for storage, perfect!

DIY Sparge System
So my last project was to create a better sparging system and this video shows what I came up with by upcycling a broken kids chair and some overflow pipe. I’ve yet to use the contraption, which I’m calling The Sparge-O-Matic MKII, so it may need some refining, but I’ll update on that after I do a brewday on Saturday.
