I REQUIRE YOU TO RANK ME THE STAR TREK SERIES

Aw, if you insist~ I can’t speak to Enterprise, since I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet (and have received conflicting opinions on whether it’s worth watching), but I can do the other four.

1. DS9 – My fave. It’s awesome and was probably ahead of its time. It’s got story arcs, character development, and conflict and moral dilemmas that aren’t easily resolved in the span of the episode. I can’t think of anyone but a few minor characters who I don’t have at least some affection for.

2. TNG – Really fun once it gets off the ground. It’s first couple seasons are pretty rough, but it’s episodic, so you can skip most of the really bad ones without missing anything. Once it hits season 3-4, the writing gets consistently good and there are a few eps that never fail to make me cry. It also has Data and Data’s adorable.

3. Voyager – Ehh, I’m so torn on Voyager, not because it’s bad exactly, but because of how much better it could have been. I felt that it had a lot of wasted potential. Without going on a rant, my biggest criticism is that the premise of the show is undermined by its tone and episodic nature. TNG had a mostly upbeat optimistic tone and by being episodic, there were very few lasting consequences to the events of any given episode. That worked, because the crew of the Enterprise didn’t usually stray far from Federation space and could always go get patched up at the nearest starbase when shit went down. Voyager doesn’t have that option, but in the show, that doesn’t matter. I could go through whole stretches of Voyager episodes before I’d remember “Oh yeah, these people are lost in unfamiliar territory with limited resources and can’t just run home at Warp 9.5 when they use up their last photon torpedo in the middle of a battle.” I’m not saying that it should have been grimdark edgy 24/7, but I felt like the premise and the setting should have made a difference. Aside from that, it’s a fun show and some of the character dynamics are well done. I love Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine’s relationship, and most of the EMH focused episodes are great. I can’t say I had strong attachments to anyone else, though.

TOS – Oh TOS, how I wanted to love you. This is gonna be one of those YMMV things, but for me, it was just too dated for me to really appreciate. I expected to come away loving Chekov and Sulu and Uhura, etc. But in the show, they’re basically just background decoration? The only characters I felt like I had enough insight into to grow fond of were Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. These aren’t really flaws, though, just 60s TV. What viewers expected to get out of TV series then aren’t the same things we expect from shows now. I find the retro-future aesthetics very charming, and it’s interesting in a historical sense, but I could never just sit down and watch it on its own terms and genuinely enjoy it.
