Style Profiles: Our Boston Posh Party Hosts
These Boston babes know how to dress up polished, prep & oh so glam, and these four New England fashion bloggers are going to teach us how to wear dresses in our favorite prep and nautical styles!
If you absolutely fall in love with the fashion of our fabulous Boston hosts, be sure to join us for our "Polished, Prep & Glam" LIVE Posh Party from Boston this week. If you’re in the area, RSVP on Eventbrite today!
Check out how these ladies fashion a new appreciation for stripes:
THE "EYE CANDY" LOOK Kara of "The Bostonista"
Barbie only wishes she had this dress! The lovely Miss Kara takes prep to a whole new level of feminine and wears pink head to toe, wearing a loud print with a softer shoe to break up the color.
THE "NAUTICAL BUT NICE" LOOK Kristen of "The Boston Fashionista"
Kristen's dress is the very picture of New England polished, and we just want to sail away on vacation in this dress.
THE "SOME LIKE IT FLORAL" LOOK McKenna of "McKenna Bleu"
McKenna's outfit proves that prep doesn't have to be in Oxford blues and grays! She livens up her stripe with a bright yellow and florals galore, and we admire her style bravado!
THE "DOTTED DIVA" LOOK Lynzy of "Sparkling Footsteps"
While stripes might be the queen of preppy print, polka dots are a refreshing new take on the trend. Both sweet and stylish, we can't help but fall in love with Lynzy's darling look, and don't get us started on how much we love that hat.
See you soon, Boston!
2013: The Resolutions Post
Alas, the first week of January is over and I have yet to solidify the things I want to do differently. 2013 has begun in a completely direction than the year previous. For the first time in three years, I don’t have a nine to five job. It’s been interesting adjusting to life without the same routine (I’m very much a routine girl). I’m also married. Last year at this time I was back and forth to Florida trying to prepare for our destination wedding, which was slightly stressful (mind you, Palm Beach is a nice escape from the Toronto winter). Needless to say, I have spent some time thinking about resolutions and wanted to share them here.
1. Keep my health in check: Yes, this means the gym. I hate the gym - I have this elaborate fear of the place and thinking about going gives me anxiety. However, J has been going for the past few months and his dedication has really motivated me. So, along with the others who resolve to get their bodies back in shape - I, too, will be heading to the gym more often this year. And no - I will not be posting photos of the elliptical on Instagram. If you’re looking for motivation, I suggest following Robyn Baldwin and Jessica Rogers. Both of these women are amazing in creating goals and achieving them. Later this month the three of us are planning a Saturday morning run (my hope is that I can keep up). Tomorrow is day one of my triumphant (or not) return of the gym - wish me luck.
2. Leave the tech at the (bedroom) door: J and I sleep with all devices beside us and there are many nights when the bright light of my iPad disrupt my sleep. Thank you, Apple, for “Do Not Disturb” mode but I think I need something more. Like clockwork, I wake up in the morning and reach for my phone to check Instagram, Twitter, email - in that order, which is sick. As soon as we got home from vacation I dismantled my bedside docking station and stuck it in a box (partially because my new iPad can’t dock there anymore because of the lightning charger). Before I go to bed, I set all my devices in the library to charge. They are out of sight and really allow me to unwind. I’ve had a few days where I’ve reached for my phone but overall, I feel better.
3. Family: I am so blessed to have my family live relatively close to me however, I don’t take enough time to get uptown to see them. I simply plan on visiting (my Grandmother at least) once a week. She is such a pleasure to sit and chat with and seeing her face light up when we arrive at her house is a blessing.
4. Write: I am so happy to have a friend like Anne Donahue; she responded to a “fan” who asked her how she got started and continues to be a successful writer (read it here). I also have a TV writer pal called Cole who gave me simple yet solid advice - just keep writing everyday. Lastly, Zooey Deschanel was quoted in an interview in this month’s Glamour magazine talking about her “brand”:
On whether she considers her hair to be part of her “brand”… Zooey Deschanel: ”This business is all about branding! But I’ve never been like, “Let’s calculate an image.” I’m just, “I like that. Let’s do that.” I grew up loving French New Wave movies, and so a lot of what I like is that style. It’s just about doing what you like so that when you look at yourself, you’re not disgusted. And I’m all about unintentional. I’m not a calculated person…. Somebody asked me, “How did you start doing comedy?” and I was like, “By being unintentionally funny.” I think making a movie or a record, the best things happen by accident—and those end up being the magic. Every time I’ve followed my gut it’s been better than when I’ve tried to do what I was supposed to do.”
What I like best is the bit about following her gut. In my own experience, I see the fashion blog world as an over-populated space lacking uniqueness. Believe me, I love looking at everyone’s beautifully styled outfits - but there has to be more. The more (or the additional features) are what I want to achieve - I just haven’t pin-pointed exactly what it is yet. Lynzy of the blog Sparkling Footsteps put to paper (or the internet) my exact thoughts on the topic of fashion blogging and I admire her for it:
"When I first started my blog, I compared my blog with others’ and thought - “wow, I really love the way she wore that-I need it” OR “I wish I could afford those shoes she is wearing” ETC.
I did this for quite awhile, buying things along the way that I did not need - actually, way too many things that I didn’t need.
I used to plan my days off around “outfit posts” and not actually enjoying the days that I had to myself. I mean let’s be real, I work 40 (or more) hours in an emergency room and that doesn’t leave much room for “play time” and blogging.
Why? Why did I think I needed to rush out and get those pictures? Why did I need to buy all of these things and feature them in a post or two? What the **** are you doing Lynzy?
I feel that this blog needs to be a place that appropriately reflects who I am. I am a runner. I am a healer. I am an animal lover. I am someone who wants to have a big, happy family. I am someone who loves to help others.
Yes, I love fashion - but this blog needs to reflect more of everything else in my life. There are projects and events I have attended through blogging (more fashion related) that I have no desire to attend or take part in again. Mostly, because I felt that some of those people have no actual desire to “know” me or to really establish any type of relationship."
I use my Tumblr as an exploration of my writing and will continue to do so until I find a concrete and insightful way to engage readers (at which point perhaps I’ll establish a whole new site). That may never happen - we’ll see.
Fin. These are the things that I’ve thought about the most. Along the way I’m sure I’ll find more things to add and perhaps document. In the meantime, I look forward to putting these into action and revelling in my successes.
What are you resolutions and how do you plan on keeping them?
