Keyleth breaking the sparkstone.
Da man, Da myth, De Merritt. Emeryville, CA-based bookbinder John DeMerritt is a legend in his own time. These snapshots from his studio provide a glimpse of the treasure trove of unique fabrics, antique presses, and backlog of incredible projects. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with John on a couple of custom projects this year included a limited edition book for the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library and this custom portfolio case for a commissioned project I photographed between Helena, MT and Ogden, UT. A white-gold, cover inlay mimics the 1882 Utah & Northern Railway route, reproduced in 1937 by the legendary Professor Lillibridge, and sourced in the Idaho State University Archives. I photographed people and place along this route in to reference a 1893 perspective of the northern Rocky Mountains. Thanks @fivedemerits, @demrritt.pauwels.editions, and others for helping create a lasting home for these pictures. #Sparkstone #Sparkstone_MEvans #McNairEvans (at 45th Street Artists Coop) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bor7zLlASMg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1iezvrcp43knk
Sparkstone: Warrior of RainClan
Though RainClan is known for its overall friendly demeanor, there are exceptions to this idea. Sparkstone is the main exception. Prickly and angry, Sparkstone is the only surviving kin of the previous leader Oatstar. Her father and sister were both killed during Ashstar’s Ambush. The grief of losing her only family turned this once proud and optimistic cat into a husk of her former self. She feels hurt and betrayed that Pearlstar has filled RainClan’s ranks with former rogues and loners after what happened the last time. She won’t ever act upon these emotions though, since she’s too loyal to RainClan and the warrior code. She carries out her responsibilities dutifully, but she hardly socializes with any cat unless she absolutely has to (during patrols, hunting, etc.), and she trusts no one. She might be a pain in the tail most of the time, but RainClan values her for her skills. She’s a silent and powerful force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, fighting viciously for what she perceives as her Clan’s last shred of honor and dignity.
Sparkstone is the daughter of Oatstar and Cinderflower (both deceased) and the sister of Flutterheart (deceased).
Pearlstar of RainClan is Sparkstone’s greatest enemy.
Fun Fact: Sparkstone would never admit it to any cat (mostly because there are no living cats that she trusts), but she knows in her heart that all of RainClan’s newer members are trustworthy. She only acts angry all the time so that she doesn’t have to deal with the deep sadness rooted inside of her.

It's hard to imagine how much work goes into creating a photo series, shaping that series into a book sequence, adapting it to a wall, developing collaborative projects, realizing them as installations, and translating your inspirations and motivations into public events. However, the opportunity to realize all of this is an absolute honor and thrill. Thank you @snider9183 @moniquedeschaines @aufuldish @littlebrownmushroom @amandaboe @mushroom_collector @kevinkunishi @mahaney_mark @toddhido #mikesmith @pawn2king4 @cordovastudios @markryanfineart @lightsource_sf @smithandersennorth @sterlinggraphicssf and many others! As we enter the last week of Begin Anywhere I invite you all down to SF Camerawork to share this show, a celebration of collaboration and community within contemporary photography. #Sparkstone #SFCamerawork #SFC_BeginAnywhere (at SF Camerawork)
