Fish Shadow Conceptual Piece
Made with adoration of my Senegal Bichir, Rainbow Fish, Ghost Knife Fish, and special mentions to my leopard pleco.
This exploration prompts illusion and mystery to what may be behind the veil.
If done correctly in an exhibiting scenario, this idea could be portrayed as a climatical experience. I.e, only after being in the room for 10 minutes are you allowed to look behind the screen and realise there are no fish left, only what we remember as fish.
This ties into my text Maui Maui, and additionally the seabed and foreshore act in which I am politically inspired by.
Drawing in Space Parul Gupta Drawing in space is a project based on special narrative and questions of perception. This spatial exploration can we post somewhere between installation and abstract line drawings. The work is response to clear architectural forms, space and their illusionary character. It aims to create a special experience of form and volumes created merely by lines. #Lines #ThenThereWasALine #Beaut #SpaceAndForm #SpatialDesign #IndiaAesthetic #Architecture #ArchitecturalDetails #Tie #DrawingInSpace #ParulGupta #WhereIsSpace #JawaharKalaKendra #Jaipur #JaipurDiaries #JaipurJournal #Rajasthan #India #Wanderer #Wanderlust #Travel #Travelogue #TravelDiaries (at JKK-Jaipur, Jawahar Kala Kendra) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnS0zpqFtvf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=oieghdtygcf5
Exoticism
The top picture is a 20-drop wallpaper designed by Jean-Gabriel Charvet in 1804. It depicts Captain James Cook’s adventures in NZ and South Pacific Islands. 200 years later, Maori artist Lisa Reihana redesigned the artwork to make it more realistic with what happened from a different viewpoint.
The British seemed to like the idea of the exotic, foreign and ‘magical’. The Great Exhibition at The Crystal Palace in 1851 is another example of putting on display other countries and nationalities, which was copied at The Wintergardens in Auckland in 1913. This way of showing off foreign places and people is not necessarily a good thing, describing others as different and exotic tends to put people in a box that is not supposed to integrate with others.
The Wintergardens display of exotic plants is a nod to this history. Is it done kindly and with understanding and inclusion now? Or is the ‘exotic’ labelled and put in a box, meant to stay separate from our colonial way of life?
