Iiaat: when I was growing up 0-around 13? Ish I always spoke super quietly and nobody could hear me. I would think I was talking normal (even super loud sometimes) but still people would be like ?? SpEaK uP. But now, I speak (I think) in a normal range, but I'm worried I'm actually talking Too Loud bc I've caught myself sounding a lot louder then a think I should. It's like I've switched my volume control/awareness problems as I've gotten older
Yes, autistic people often have difficulties with volume / volume control, that is, either speaking too quietly or too loudly.
I have the same issue - I naturally speak very quietly. Growing up, I was frequently told to speak up (if people noticed I was talking at all). On the one hand, being talked over, not heard and having to repeat myself increases my anxiety around speaking at all. On the other, speaking up makes me uncomfortable for the same reason you mentioned - it feels way too loud, like I am yelling.
Who else experiences this?
