Kai thinks about what Lloyd said at the beginning of their conversation. How many people have pretended to be this kid’s friend, only to stab him in the back? He doesn’t have anyone.
And, well, Kai happens to have a friend group dedicated to hating Garmadon anyway, so there’s only one natural conclusion to be drawn here.
Lloyd needs to join the Secret Ninja team.
or:
tasked by Green to find new recruits for the team, Kai finds his eye drawn back over and over again to one particular person. Now if only Green would get over whatever issue he has with Lloyd Garmadon joining.

Kai starts to notice him more and more often.
There's probably a principle or something to it. Now that Kai has Lloyd Garmadon on his mind, he can't help but see him everywhere: in the back of his classes, against the hallway walls, in the shadows of the school.
And he’s not even doing anything out of the ordinary! He’s still doing his normal routines, his normal routes; nothing has changed but he’s suddenly realizing just how easily Lloyd Garmadon fades into the background of everything.
Well, that is at least up until someone throws him into the spotlight.
They’re in History and the teacher suddenly moves Garmadon’s seat, citing something about not wanting him in the back “unsupervised” and places him in the front row. The girls in the row behind all titter and whisper to each other. Their giggles are loud, but the teacher ignores them, and with each passing second Lloyd hunches further and further into himself.
Kai frowns. It’s kind of a mean thing to do, even if Lloyd has-
Wait.
What has the guy actually done?
Kai wracks his memory. There was that time that Chen said that Lloyd tripped him in front of the cheerleading squad, and of course the incident back in middle school when he started the biggest food fight the cafeteria had ever seen, oh, and who could forget the time that he fake-dated Harumi, causing the poor girl to burst into tears in the middle of class when she found out the news?
There’s more. But as Kai brings those memories to the forefront of his mind, a frown grows on his face. Those – Kai’s done worse things than those. He got into a fistfight not even a month ago behind the school after he saw some kids harassing another student. For someone who’s supposed to be the biggest troublemaker in forever, Lloyd Garmadon hasn’t done much, if anything at all, in the last handful of years.
The realization lingers with him throughout the rest of class and all the way to lunch period.
It’s how he finds himself pulling out the chair across from Lloyd’s at his empty table and setting his bento atop it.
so you know how the ml fandom is famous for awkward identity shenanigans? hear me out: movie!Kai and movie!Nya who don’t know each other’s secret identities for whatever reason and how they would attempt to make excuses to each other
K, bolting out of his class: wait a minute. what are you doing out of class?
N, clearly heading in the opposite direction of the bathrooms: uh a bathroom break duh.
N: what are you doing out of class?
K, also clearly heading in the opposite direction of the bathrooms: going to the bathroom duh
or what about when Nya shows up with her new motorcycle and Kai’s gotta ask where the heck she got it
K, visibly sweating: uh Nya, you know that you can tell me anything, right?
N, rubbing a cloth over her new bike with adoration: ya huh
K: so you didn’t, idk, join a gang or anything to get this bike right? that would be crazy ha ha
N, pausing in her cleaning: define gang
K: *internal screaming*
alternatively:
N: what? no! the green ninja made this for me!
N, immediately, internally: oh shoot now he’s gonna know i’m Gray crap
K, internally: Green is dating my sister????
K and N walking home when Garmadon attacks:
K: I just remembered, I promised to help mom weed the garden
N, already sprinting for the nearest alley: chill anyway I told dad i’d go fishing with him this afternoon so this works out great see you later
they don’t have a garden and Ray hates seafood
last but not least
N as Gray, exhausted, coming off a four-hour long battle at 2:30 am on a school night: hey did you pick up the milk mom wanted earlier
