Movie of the Day - Special Animation: Haibane Renmei

I'm very late in my "motd" schedule so I'm posting a special today! A special about an anime (from Japan) that I found very poetic.

灰羽連盟 Haibane renmei, Une fille qui a des ailes grises (in french in the japan title) is also called "Ailes Grises" in french and, I think, Haibane renmei, a girl who has grey wings in english. And it's an anime about...angels...

Yes, angels. And I can tell you it's weird to talk about angels in a japan show. But if it's about angels, with wings and haloes...

...it's not about God.

Let me explain: we don't really know what they are and we don't know why they are. They just are. In this strange world, a little town in fact, surrounded by a wall. In this world, angels appear one day in a, sort of, cocoon.

Inside the cocoon, they dream...

...when they wake up, already old for some of them, they're named in fonction of what they dreamed (it's really important).

After that, other angels give them their haloes

...and their wings grow up...

Yeah it's painful.

Angels have to live outside the town with other angels. The town is composed of humans, and none of them know why they're in that town, why angels exist, why they cannot leave...This is not the purpose of the anime to answer those questions. Angels cannot keep money, they have to pay with paper (a little pad is given to them by people above them, yeah it's strange) and they all have to have a job, except the little ones.

Here the main characters (only girls here, but angel can be boys too):

- Kuu ("air" in french, "sky" in english, she was dreaming about flying/floatting in the sky)...not kidding the names ARE important, she's the best friend of Rakka

- Rakka ("chute" in french, "falling" maybe in english, because she was dreaming about falling)=> MAIN CHARACTER, the first ep is her "birth".

- Hikari ("lumière" in french, "light" in english, was dreaming about being in full light, she's the one in charge of the haloes)

- Kana ("rivière et poisson" in french, "river fish" in english, she was swimming with fishes)

- Nemu ("sommeil" in french, "sleep" in english, she was dreaming...that she was dreaming...yep)

- Reki ("caillou" in french, "small stone" in english, she was walking on a road), she's the "leader", taking care of everyone.

What I didn't say is that, after some time, they disappear. When it is time for them, they leave...alone...and just...disappear...without explanation...It's the "Day of Flight" ("Jour de l'envol").

Nobody knows why. They think they leave when they're "ready". It can be years after their birth, it can be 2 months later.

Of course, we will see one of them during her "Day of Flight" and the main character will take it badly considering she's new and don't understand the rules of this strange world yet. All she will see is that one of her friends is gone.

She will fall into depression. You know what??? I'm understanding it NOW!

It's crazy I watched this anime so long ago, just after its release in France, in 2002!!! I was 12!

And now I understand everything. I'm seeing everything. This was about depression. This was totally about depression. I mean, I saw it of course, I saw it in the main character, but I I'm seeing more now, especially in another character...

Guess what I will probably do tomorrow? Yep, rewatch this show.

And she will have to adapt to this strange world. Again, God is not mentionned. It's more about spirituality. I'm not the kind to like spirituality, but this was also pure poetry and just for that you should watch it.
