Cartoon Action Hour: The Dark Brigade ~ Spectrum Games (2014)
Day 8: My Top 5 Spectrum Games
Hello people, now I admit the first home computer I ever owned was a 48K ZX Spectrum. The Rubber keyed version and it lasted me for many years. However it died and I moved onto other machines. However I do now own a working 128K Spectrum "Toastrack" and DivIDE so every now and then I start it up to play a few games.
I would really love to get my hands on a new Spectrum Next but that is very unlikely any time soon.
People may consider numerous games better than the ones I choose, but these are the ones I come back to time and time again.
Anyway on with the games...
5. Manic Miner (1983,Bug Byte/Software Projects)
Well I don't think you get a more quintessential game than Matt Smith's classic of Manic Miner. Obviously it's been used as an example game many times over and has been converted to many different systems, but for most the Spectrum version will always be seen as the original and most known.
You take control of Miner Willy and you have to make your way through 20 levels collecting items, avoiding various bad guys and making your way to the exit.
It's a platform game but even to this day it is challenging. To be honest many thousand words have probably written by people about this game and probably more eloquently than I.
A timeless classic for a reason. Play it today...
4. Bruce Lee (1985, US Gold)
Now I will be honest with you if you ask most people the version of Bruce Lee many will recommend the Commodore 64 version of the game. However I find the C64 version interesting. For me I didn't get to play that version until much later. The Spectrum version for me was the first version I played so it will always be my favourite.
There is also a quirk with Spectrum version that you really don't have to fight either of the bad guys most of the time you can outrun them and while they may get the odd shot, if you are smart you can complete the game with very little engagement with them.
Also there is a glitch when in the temple where you can climb the ladder and then go back down and literally hide in the floor.
The game while many may say is reasonably easy to beat is also quite fun so you will come back and play it time and time again.
3. Knight Tyme (1986, Mastertronic)
This is the third game in the Magic Knight series written by David Jones. Many prefer Spellbound or Finders Keepers but this is my favourite. I think the main reason for that was it was the first game I completed without having to consult magazines for the puzzles.
Now Knight Tyme did release on Spectrum in two versions. The 48K version and the 128K version. Now at the time I couldn't play the 128K version as all I had was the 48K as I said. In time I did get to play the 128K version and it was much more complex but over time I managed to complete that version too.
In fact I even helped out with a remake version on PC by being a play tester and bug reporter so that proves how much I actually like the game.
2. Chronos (1987, Mastertronic)
Now Chronos - Tapestry of Time is one of those games that if you see the cover art and it was £1.99. Like many Mastertronic games you would have thought it to be not a great game. How wrong you would be.
Chronos is a game written by Steven and John Tatlock. Upon the game loading you are given a sampled tune from Tim Follin which is absolutely mind blowing for the humble Speccy.
The game is a side scrolling shooter. You have been assigned to fly your way through 5 levels, while being attacked by various enemies before you ultimately have to take on Chronos the keeper of time.
The game is nice to look at, if reasonably challenging to play and the little touches such as messages and strange things through the various levels will make you smile.
Some would say it's pretty repetitive but I love the game. Highly recommended.
1. Tornado Low Level (1984, Vortex Software)
Tornado Low Level written by Costa Panayi. Is a simple idea in concept but the game itself is not as easy as it seems.
Basically your job is to pick up targets by flying over them at a very low level. Obviously they are scattered about the map at certain points. You gain extra points if you fly with your wings swept back causing you to move faster.
What makes the game unique is one the plane turns using wide arcs so it's not a simple case of turn left you have to swing the plane around to line up with your target. Also if you are too high the target will be missed.
Another thing you have to keep an eye on is your fuel. Obviously if you fly faster you use more fuel but your turning arc is tighter. So there is that as additional thing to worry about.
Sure you can land your plane and refuel but on the far right is a timer and if that runs out then you will fail.
In your way are pylons, houses and other obstacles. However as the game gets more advanced the targets on later runs get stuck in more and more awkward places including on water.
Yess TLL had the ability to have fly above the water and if you are not careful you will smash into the land. Not many games in 1984 had that pseudo 3D element.
I spent many hours on it and even now normally if I fire up a Spectrum emulator or the Toastrack it's the first game I play.
So what are your favourite Spectrum games... let me know.
Episode #304 - P47 Thunderbolt - ZX Spectrum Review
Welcome watchers of illusion, to my castle of confusion! I am looking at P47 Thunderbolt on the Speccy today, an arcade conversion of a game I really enjoyed on the Arcade. This is a pretty good effort to be honest, let down by a crappy sound set. Nice intro music sets the scene, but there's nothing in game apart from 48k sound effects.
Game play is tight, and the controls are very responsive which make it a joy to play. Collision detection is amazing too, which is rare for a spectrum game. All in all, I recommend this one as a brilliant shooter! - Apparently the end boss takes quite a hammering before it dies by the way - arcade version coming soon!
Do you agree with what I have to say? let me know in the comments, and remember to subscribe!
