Just wanted to say, I really needed to hear your twitter rant from a few days ago about Starting Your Dang Comic. So follow up question to the one about scripting: how far ahead do you script and outline? Do you have your whole story heavily outlined or do you solidify things as you get closer to them? Thanks, love Wilde Life, the last few pages made me take a minute to calm down.

I have the first 12 chapters scripted out (that’s the first big arc) and then outlines and plans beyond that. 12 chapters is a pretty big chunk of pages and I didn’t want to go any further until I knew what WL’s long-term plans could be.

And yeah, I for sure tighten things up as I go. Even as I drew this chapter I cut stuff out and moved it around. 

I think what works best is to make sure you have the bones all in place, and then any big important plot points noted, and then your individual writing style will determine what shape the rest of it takes.

The most important thing is don’t let wanting whatever aspect of the planning to be so perfect that you totally block yourself off from starting. You need a map, but not necessarily a globe.

ALSO!!! HUGE THING!!! Don’t start your big epic as your first thing! I was tied to Zap! for 11 years and it was a really important project to me, but I kind of got stuck in this big difficult-to-market monster with a weird evolving art style that I couldn’t really do anything with. You don’t want to be in the same boat!

So, maybe while planning out your big idea, do some minis or shorts first to work through all that beginning weirdness we all have to get through.
