Been thinking of my lovely SLP homies I'm found on here. I'm wondering, should I make a purely SLP advice blog on here, or just post a bunch of SLP advice posts on this blog? If I do make a new one, what would y'all prefer - a sideblog, or an entirely new account?

Can we talk about how BCBS is screwing SLPs?

The title says it all. I am a private practice SLP-Intern and I have recently become aware of some private practice owners stating that Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) is planning to cut reimbursement rates in at least one state by like at least $10. I looked into it and found this was after having a banner year in 2022 during which they made record profits. In addition, apparently in most states (except for North Carolina) they have not raised the reimbursement rates to SLPs in 13 years.

Record. Freaking. Profits.

I'm not sure what the justification is. But it's asinine that they act as if they can't pay SLP services properly while stuffing their faces (metaphorically).

The cuts are supposed to take place next year in February. There is a campaign going on over social media, as BCBS also has the audacity to turn around and publicly pat themselves on the back for "doing so much to help improve the lives of mothers and babies and promote early intervention".

Spread the word. This is horrendously unfair to SLPs and families.

Sometimes I think about how in grad school if someone got yelled at in a coffee shop or library for looking at “inappropriate pictures” while studying vocal fold anatomy some of the professors would take them out to drinks

hi, I’m a fanfic author & a speech-language pathologist. 

it’s tough to write children in-character when you don’t have a real-life frame of reference. I’ve found this website to be super helpful - it tells you about their social/emotional development, language/communication, cognition, and motor development in point form with photo or video examples (2 months-5 years). For the older ages, try this one (it focuses less on language, etc. when it gets to age 11 but they’re pretty much talking like adults and focusing on the hormonal hell of adolescence after that point).

Making sure that you have an understanding of what is developmentally appropriate is key to writing a good child character. Sometimes I come across a story that has a four-year-old with the emotional maturity of an adult or I see an 11-year-old talking like a six-year-old, and it really throws me off as a reader. 

Let’s talk about speech. You know how kids say words wrong? That also has a developmental pattern. Consult something like this (see the “common errors” column) before you start typing out speech errors that don’t make sense or have a 3 year old say sounds they shouldn’t be able to. Transcribing speech errors is a stylistic choice (e.g., “I hafta go to da bafwoom”); in general, I would only type it out like that if the kid is adorably mispronouncing a name. And if that’s your choice, just make sure the errors actually make sense!

And what if your child character doesn’t have typically-developing speech and/or language, such as a speech sound disorder, a language disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or maybe a stutter? Consult resources like ASHA before taking a guess (or send me a private message, I’d be happy to chat about it). 

If you take the time to do some research and ensure your child character is developmentally accurate, your story will flow better and your readers will be easily immersed in your story.

Above is a composite of several recordings of a recently discharged transfeminine client who gave us permission to post her results. The first third is this former client's baseline voice (average 93 Hz); the latter two-thirds are two different mixes of this client's voice she liked, recorded on the day of discharge (1st mix avg 133 Hz; 2nd mix avg 181 Hz).
