Film Festival! It's a fun time to be in the #PonceyHighland/#L5P area of #Atlanta when the #ATLFF rolls around each spring (except for parking--YIKES). 🚫 The fest has moved through other venues including the Landmark and the Hollywood 24 (both previously featured here!) but in recent years they've settled into The Plaza and @7stages_atl as home bases, and those seem to work pretty well. 👍 This is the 40th year of Atlanta Film Festing, and it has a pretty good reputation. THE ARBALEST (featuring lots of #ATL talent) played here this week after a VERY well-received premiere at SXSW, and LIKE LAMBS (starring the kid who played Glen's friend on MAD MEN and the Asian kid from TWILIGHT) had its WORLD premiere last night! 🎥 As for my photo subjects, I'm featuring Star-Lord and a Lady #LEGO Racer to honor some cool stuff I'm enjoying this week. Lady Racer because SPEED SISTERS was a great doc about the only all-woman race-driving team in Palestine--you should see it! 🚗 Star-Lord because there's a screening of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY tomorrow afternoon with James Gunn and Michael Rooker in attendance! THAT'S COOL, Y'ALL. Maybe I'll see you there? 👽 So what is your favorite ATLFF event ever, if you have one? I will always have fond memories of seeing JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER with a pal from Texas many years ago. That's a silly and entertaining movie. Totally worth it for the ending theme song alone. Meeting Bill Pympton last year was definitely another great moment in Festival history for this animation fan! 🙌 Get out and catch some of the remaining features if you can. If you get the chance SEE THIS FILM!! It's a documentary called Speed Sisters and it's about an all women racing team in Palestine. Not the only female racers but the only female-only team in the Middle East (and probably one of few counting the rest of the world too, it's not a very female-fronted sport). They are so badass and the film is really good at showing it and also showing a side of life in Palestine that at least I don't get to see very often. Great music, fast cars, a lot of laughs - super inspiring to say the least! The film is only screening at festivals and separate screenings right now but there's plans for wider distribution online and on dvd later. #speedsisters #speedsistersfilm

Opening Night Gala Screening for Ajyal Film Festival 2014

On Monday December 1st 2014, Doha Scene attended the opening night gala screening for Ajyal Youth Festival by Doha FIlm institute.

The night started with the red carpet ceremony where the stars were being interviewed by the ever gorgeous Haneen Al Naqdi.

  The opening kicked off with a speech by Fatima Al Rumaihi, Festival Director, followed by a speech by HE the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari. 

  The opening film was Speed Sisters, which was directed by Amber Fares. The film speaks about the first all-women race car driving team in the Middle East. The movie was moving, the women were strong willed , fearless and brave. They were fighting not only traditions but the restrictions placed on them by the Israeli occupation in Palestine.

The film was followed by an open air Gala dinner , while being entertained by Arabic rap music of the amazing Palestinian band DAM, who kicked off with their famous song "Ya Sayidaty". The whole crowed was rocking on it.
