It's #BlackPanther night! I hope a bunch of y'all have already caught the first couple shows of the night & that a bunch more of you are going to midnight shows or matinees tomorrow! 🕛📽 I caught this pic of #LEGO Black Panther hauling ass off the Screen Gems lot where much of the movie was made. You can see @euescreengems behind Lakewood Amphitheater if you're there for @onemusicfest or something--big white buildings that look like you'd expect a movie studio to look like. 🎞 This used to be the Lakewood Fairgrounds, built in 1916 to host the Southeastern Fair (A Big Deal, apparently) and the grounds hosted circus tents, a carousel, a roller coaster, and other fun stuff up through the early '70s. That coaster, The Greyhound, showed up in SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT 1 & 2, and its destruction was caught on film for the second film! 🎢💥 But yeah, @Marvel brought #TChalla & friends to Screen Gems as an alternative to Pinewood (which may have been booked up with @guardiansofthegalaxy V2 at the time? I forget) and the results were STRONG! I got to see BLACK PANTHER Monday night thanks to the generosity of friends and YES, Y'ALL, it is so dang cool. 👍 Holler back if you've already seen it! Fam, I have had another birthday. As I am now a slightly older gentleman of the bricks, I am posting this shot of the ultimate Grumpy Old Man at a very G.O.M.-friendly location-- #LEGO Grandpa Simpson atop Kennesaw Mountain! 👴⛰ As you may know, "Big Kennesaw" is the highest point in the #Atlanta area, and was the site of a major artillery battle in 1864. The CSA thought they might be able to hold the mountain by hauling cannon to the top to defend against Sherman's March. That was not the case. 💥 The Confederates fell back to Smyrna soon after. 🏃🏻 SPOILER: They didn't stop the Union at the 'hooch, either. But you know that already. 🔥 Have you ever hiked up #Kennesaw Mountain? I recommend it! Pick a nice day and some trusty shoes and get your hike on! There's a paved road if you'd like an easy way down (or up, I guess,) but don't miss the actual trails, because the views are a beauty. It's Independent Bookstore Day! Looks like this has been A Thing for about three years now, but this was my first time taking part. 📚 Tons of great independent book shops across the country take part in #BookstoreDay and offer sales an exclusive items that you can't find anywhere else! 🤓 Decatur's own Little Shop of Stories is one great example of an independent bookseller that offers great service to the community and lots of fun promotional events for the whole family. 👶🏻👦🏻👧🏻👨🏻👩🏻 They've been around since 2005 and expanded and awesome-ized their store even more significantly a couple of years ago. NAHEYYY! There was a truly specTAAAACular turnout for the #MarchForScience in #CandlerPark today! With the critical thinking and the proven theorems and the hey hey hey! 🔬 The support for SCIENCE and EDUCATION on display today is truly impressive and I hope that the voices lifted up here and in other cities across the nation will be heard in every Capitol city and maybe relayed as a very short list of small-word bullet points to wherever that guy is vacationing at the moment. 😒🏌 The speakers out here include actual scientists and Georgia's Teacher of the Year--obviously one with the clout of Prof. Frink up there, but they're good folks. 😉 Do you have a job that uses science? Are you studying science in school? Let us know! Those roles are tremendously imports and truly are the key to our future. My dudes and dudettes, have you been to the Georgia Dome? You do not have a tremendous amount of time left in which to do such a thing. They're gonna blow it the HECK up sometime this Spring/Summer, as I understand it. You don't really have any more opportunities to go inside it--the ((MONSTER TRUCK JAM)) in March was the last public event there--so this entry is kind of a big ol' LATE PASS, but I had to post it while the structure still existed. 💁🏻 Donald and I visited back in January for the Honda Battle of the Bands, which was a more *marchy marchy, trumpety trumpety* than *guitar shreddy* kind of Battle of the Bands. Also, Ne-Yo was there! I was happy to get one last chance to visit the venue, and we had a lot of fun! 🎺 When it opened back in '92, the Georgia Dome was the largest covered stadium IN THE WORLD, but there are a couple of others that are bigger now. 🌎 How big is it? Well, they could seat about 74,000 folks for a football game 🏈, or about 80,000 for a concert (I saw U2 and Muse there once!) That is a lot of sports and/or The Edge fans. 🎸 What was the last thing you saw in the Georgia Dome, if you ever got to go? 🤔 Some of the notable uses of the Georgia Dome include: The '96 Olympics, where it was halved to host both basketball 🏀 and gymnastics; WrestleMania XXVII, featuring the return of The Rock™ and over 71,000 fans in attendance; numerous MONSTER JAMS and NITRO CIRCUS-type events; SuperBowl XXXIV in 2000 aka The Ray Lewis StabberBowl 🔪; and just a WHOLE bunch of college bowl games. 🐷 One last point--the field here was originally covered with AstroTurf brand fake grass, but in 2003, Big Daddy Arthur Blank had that replaced with FieldTurf brand fake grass, apparently superior? I had no idea. Anyone ever felt the difference? Okay y'all, it is a very #rare ((DOUBLE)) ((POST)) ((SUNDAY)) because I have a second time-sensitive picture that I wanna get up here. 🚨 My #LEGO wrestler, who we'll call "A Rock", is flexxxin' and showing off his trophy in front of another large rock, the RockSpinner installation at the corner of Peachtree and 10th in #Midtown #Atlanta. 🍑 Which one do you think is stronger? A Rock or a (giant) rock? Or THE ROCK™? I would like to see RockSpinner vs @TheRock, who should be in town soon for RAMPAGE, but we won't have that opportunity--the RockSpinner is due to be removed TOMORROW, April 3! 📣 So, if you wanted to get in one more spin of this giant boulder, head over there this evening and SPIN like you never spun before! 🔄 The RockSpinner--a boulder found in Nevada some 15 years ago and moved by artist Zachary Coffin, was originally featured at Burning Man, but was installed here in Midtown in late 2013 to provide a bit of interactive scenery and to let us all feel like superheroes. 💪 Have you ever spun it? I recommend it if you're anywhere nearby. Also, I wanted to post this guy on #WrestleMania day because WHY NOT? I hope those of you who enjoy that sorta thing have a good time with it! Today the Atlanta Persian Festival is rocking @piedmontpark and Aladdin and I both recommend it! There's some great food, fun music, and not ridiculous crowds. Walk 🚶🏻 or bike 🚴 or RideShare over here if you're looking for something fun to do this afternoon--the party goes until 7pm. I especially wanna shout out the Gyro Chef truck for great food and for proudly showing up at that airport protest a while back, because hey guess what--immigrants make our country great! 🇺🇸 This is the 4th annual #AtlantaPersianFestival, and it's a beautiful day to be outside. Part of the money raised today will go to @childrensatl, and we all know that's a great cause. The festival was established by the Persian Cultural Center of Atlanta. Props to those guys. Come on out and enjoy the day. Admission is free. Food and drinks are reasonably priced. 👍 # PS-Yes, there were PRINCE OF PERSIA LEGO sets but NO I do not have any. Hey there! Do you know what happens on Wednesdays? New comic books hit the shelves. Yep! Did you know that #Atlanta is kind of a hotbed of cool comics activity? We've got all sorts of rad creative folks right here in our fair city. 🍑 One of them is #ARCHER art director Neal Holman. He's got a new @onipress comic (along with Clayton McCormack & Kelly Fitzpatrick) called REDLINE that is sort of a military crime story set on Mars. And it's funny. 😂🔫 Look, LEGO Archer up there doesn't want to threaten you, but you should definitely go scoop up a copy of REDLINE #1 if you're a fan of @archerfxx. It dropped last week, but I'm sure that your finer local stores can still provide you with a copy. This picture is from a signing Neal did @criminalrecordscomics on Saturday. I know @doctafoo is signing some WILD STORM books up at @galacticquest this evening, too, so check that out if you're in the Northern Reaches! I _think_ this little corner park just East of Freedom is Goldsboro Park, though that may only be the bit across Euclid? Anyway, this nifty sculpture appeared here around 2012 after originally spending a couple of years in Chicago's Millennium Park. You can't see the Tree in this shot, but it's cool. Hey y'all. Coming at you from the Northernmost reaches of the general #ATL area for the day! I hope you're all spending some quality time with folks you care about and eating like KINGS! Like DAMN HELL ASS KINGS! 👑 I know, I know, Thanksgiving is largely about us having gotten AWAY from the crown, but liked the image of King Legofus III up there chompin' on a drumstick for the occasion. 🍗 Cumming, GA is named after William Benjamin Cumming of Augusta, a planter, a soldier of some repute, and a bit of a political loudmouth. His knack for bickering with SC Congressman George McDuffie eventually resulted in a DUEL that left the Carolinian with a non-fatal bullet in his back and a lifetime limp. 🔫 Col. Cumming received recognition for his action in a few skirmishes in the early 1800s, and Pres. Polk offered him the rank of Major General in 1847 (to help with the Mex-American War), but dude was about 60 years old by then, and he politely declined. Cumming passed away back in Augusta in 1863. 💀 There's been a huge amount of growth and development in the years since I've lived in ATL. It's mostly chains like you see pictured above, but there are some notable spots! Norman's Landing is always worth a visit if you're up this way. Do you recognize the two-dimensional gentle-spirit creeping along the wall behind Force Ghost Vitruvius up there? It is Mr. Fangs! AKA The Geist. Kind of an unofficial mascot for #ATL! 👻 From a page that may or may not belong to his creator you can learn that Fangs is there to remind #ATLiens that their city is full of memories that haunt the streets they walk. I’m cool with that. 👍 The color of the Geist is said to indicate the emotion of the tag--where white=memory, yellow=playful, red=beef, etc. 🌈 So who’s the artist? You won’t see his tag with the ghosts, but he’s known as Mr. TOTEM, and he’s an accomplished muralist with credits all over the globe, including plenty of amazing work right here in #Atlanta. The corner piece across from Figo Edgewood is his, for example--you have probably seen at least 3 rap videos being shot in front of that one if you spend any time in the area. A lot of his mural work centers on his Mechanical Battle Serif font, which looks like maybe that liquid metal thing from THE MATRIX is happening to some crazy-ass letters on a wall. There are 2D & 3D versions of this stuff, and you should really check out his gallery at mr-totem.com to get a good feel for what is possible with some paint & a wall. 🖌 But back to @misterfangs! Little ghost dude was around for years, then went underground around 2007 for a while. BUT! He seems to have been making a resurgence since 2014 or so, and you can see him more often these days, including this one near Oakland Cemetery. ☠ SO, there’s a screening of a street art doc called WALL WRITERS happening tomorrow night (11/16) at The Plaza at 7p followed by a Q&A w/none other than @mistertotem2 & @dr.dax (previously mentioned in the Disco Kroger post)! I know a bunch of you made it over to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens this season for the Chihuly Nights exhibit. 🔮 Well guess what? THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN of SLEEPY HOLLOW was walking (riding?) among you! 🏇 Does that strike terror in your hearts? It probably shouldn't because even in his horse, my dude is only like 4" high. He does have a tiny sword, though! 🗡 He could stab the h*ck out of your unprotected ankle if you were wearing shorts like most people were because it's still 80 degrees in late October! 🎃 Dale Chihuly's blown glass art is a regular fixture in the @atlbotanical gardens here, but having additional pieces available for nighttime viewing is sort of a special thing, and admittedly looks pretty cool. Mr. #Chihuly has been making elaborate glass art for spaces around the world since the late '60s, including some record-breakingly large ones. Also, he wears an eye patch due to the loss of sight in his right eye in a 1976 car accident. Don't let a handicap stop you, friends! Get out there and do your thing or make your art or whatever it is you need to do! 👍 SO. Who do y'all thing might be in the Horseman costume in this picture? You are probably aware of the most famous/infamous grocery store in #Atlanta. Well, its time is short on this world. Soon (that is, the day after tomorrow) the Murder Kroger aka Beltline Kroger will be no more, and yet another very tall building of expensive apartment homes and a parking garage will take its place. I'm not even going to go into the history here, because it's not a pretty story, but there have been crimes committed here, and there should have been better law enforcement and monitoring in place to prevent them. Maybe the new development will get that. The proximity of the @atlantabeltline has brought increased attention and prices to the area, obviously. For a while the store tried to take advantage of this and added a neat on-ramp and some other amenities, but it looks like they eventually decided to just sell it all. Tonight there's a candle-LIT vigil for the #MurderKroger and for those who were lost over the years. Maybe you'd like to stop by? It's also a food drive for the Atlanta Food Bank, so bring a couple extra cans of something from the pantry, won't you? 🍲 I figured if anyone could make right the terrible things that have happened on this site it would be GHOST RIDER, and since it's on the Beltline, he rode his bicycle this time. BEWARE HIS PENANCE STARE! 🔥 Also beware the nearly-expired meat on sale at half off right now. 🍖 I did snag some of that half-price ice cream, though! 🍧 I'm all about that.
