Hey there, followers of Musica in Extenso, I will admit that my work crisis has taken a bite out of this, our eighth series on Female Composers. But today we’ll catch up!

First, a very recent work, Selene - Moon Chariot Rituals (2015), an octet for percussion and string quartets by American composer Augusta Read Thomas, formerly Composer in Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, performed here by Third Coast Percussion and the Spektral Quartet.

Two excellent quartets. Amazing how completely different two performances of the same Brahms quartet can be.

As part of the exhibit “Common Time” at the MCA Chicago, they are presenting a performance by the Spektral Quartet of Morton Feldman’s String Quartet #2. Fans of new music know that this work is notoriously long and difficult, performances lasting somewhere between 4 and 6 hours (depending on how you handle the frequent repeats in the score). Anyone who thinks Schubert’s works are “too long” needs to be locked in a small room with the Feldman Second Quartet. While I may not have the patience for the entire work, the open rehearsal that the Spektral Quartet gave on March 4 revealed both the considerable difficulties of the piece, and its occasional transcendent moments. For example, page 22 of the score suddenly opens into a passage of surprising tonal simplicity, sounding for all the world like something Copland might have written if he’d smoked a a lot of high-grade weed. Page 22 can be heard in this recording by the FLUX Quartet, between 8:39 and 14:08. Check it out.
