Dear Retired English Teacher,
If I had wanted you to point out my spelling error I would have asked for someone to proofread my post. To proofread means to “read” and “mark any errors”. I did not. Miss-spelling is not a Crime.
Facebook does not have a spell check feature, which means that spelling on Facebook, isn’t important. It is in fact entirely open to anything! Facebook is an outlet for creativity which can even include deliberately miss-spelled words.
My post communicated an idea. My post was a year and a half old. For an entire year and a half no one cared about the miss-spelled word.
Which makes me wonder what is special about YOU?
Communication is an exchange of information. If you received the information conveyed, then communication was achieved. If you are not asked to mark errors in the communication, then marking errors is not a natural way to respond to the communication. I would think an English Teacher would understand that.
Facebook is NOT an English class. No one signed up for English advice or criticism. When you place a comment on a post it should be meaningful, because the notification that the person gets will inturrupt their day. Any time you inturrupt someone, you should do so using good manners.
If you are still in need of papers to grade, maybe you shouldn’t have retired.
If you are still in need of papers to grade, maybe you should open a proof-reading service.
I personally have many clients of whom English is not their first language. If I was always correcting their spelling in communication, rather than just understanding what is meant, I wouldn’t have any clients....
“Get A Life” means find meaningful work that helps people, uplifts them, and empowers them. Correcting spelling or other grammatical errors on random Facebook posts that you come accross, can’t possibly be fulfilling, and I know for sure that the inturruption is purely annoying!
I will NOT fix spelling of the word because I think this point is much more important!
Be a Teacher, not a Bully!
