We miss spicy pie.
missing spicy pie
Spicy pie.
The weekend ends as it began. Big thanks to Tumblr Creatrs for bringing us. See you next year Coachella (and you too Spicy Pie.)
Spicy Pie while the sun is still up?! So much new food this year I decided to kick things off old school. (at Coachella Music Festival)
Hungry? We’ve announced the chefs, restaurants and vendors that will be serving hand-crafted dishes. New this year, three full-service sit down restaurants. Plus returning favorites Spicy Pie & crab fries. http://bit.ly/CoachellaFoodLineup
Coachella Song of the Day (99 Days Until Coachella): “Oh My Sweet Carolina” from Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker
Every year in Indio, California one of the world’s most resplendent events takes place. For two weekends in April the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival occupies the lush Empire Polo Grounds as a nexus for great bands and stunning visuals. Each weekend 90,000 attendees are able to choose from over 100 musical acts alongside exceptional art installations, some of which can only be seen at the festival. However, Coachella exists not only as a gathering for audiophiles, but an oasis from the mundane lifestyle many of us are subject to in order to, well, pay for Coachella.
In many ways, Coachella’s geographic location is the perfect representation of its emotional significance. Physically outside of the lush festival grounds there are miles and miles of bare and shriveled desert. For many festival-goers, outside of Coachella exists a career, bad weather, and obligations to more than Spicy Pie and making it to that next set on time. For two weekends in April every year there is a mandatory heartbeat of relief in Indio, California.
While I combat mundane aspects of life with a trip to Coachella each year, singer-songwriter Ryan Adams combats them with clever turns of phrase, raw emotion, and incredibly unique creativity. Adams’ debut album, Heartbreaker, features fifteen tracks that linger in the rarely ventured territory of painfully heartfelt and emotionally severe music. On Heartbreaker,Adams is giving away a piece of himself that isn’t masked in complexity or convoluted symbolism. Whether you’re reached by blasting blues-scales in the upbeat “To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)” or the meticulously picked banjo riffs in the emotional crescendo of “Come Pick Me Up,” you are part of a carefully cultivated emotional journey.
“Oh My Sweet Carolina” may not come across to listeners with the same energy as the album’s gritty electric guitar lead tracks, and it may not be the emotional powerhouse of “Come Pick Me Up,” but it’s uniquely beautiful in its own merit. The blending of Adams’ voice along with the iconic Emmylou Harris throughout the track is done through a gorgeous harmonization of Adams’ rough, yet spirited sound and Harris’ masterful soprano. The minimalism of instruments used by softly hammered guitar notes, piano, and subdued percussion allows the vocals to stand on their own endless appeal for almost the entire track.
