you leaned against the brick wall of the restaurant, busy street in front of you, you phone vibrating in your hand as another message popped up on the screen.
running late. i'll be there soon. promise! :)
a small smile tugged at your lips as you read his text. will had that effect on you, always managing to make even the simplest of messages seem endearing. he was always a little late -- sometimes a few minutes, sometimes longer -- but you were used to it by now. it was part of his charm, and wasn't really something you minded. after all, if anyone was worth waiting for, it was him.
your eyes wandered to the street, people bustling by in every direction, the city alive with its usual hum. you loved the energy here, but tonight, it felt different. something more exciting. it was supposed to be your first date in a long time, one of you always ending up being busy and having to cancel. you couldn't help the nervous flutter in your chest as you thought about what the evening might bring.
but as you stood there, lost in thought, something felt off. a shadow moved at the corner of your vision -- too fast, too quiet. you didn't even register the presence behind you until it was too late.
a rough hand clamped over your mouth, dragging you backward into the darkness of the alley. your heart skipped in panic, your mind scrambling for a way out. you kicked your legs, thrashing against your attacker, but the grip was tight, and fear surged through your body. the alley was narrow, the air thick with the scent of wet concrete, the night too quiet except for your frantic breathing.
no. no, this can't be happening. not tonight.
you couldn't think. you just fought, adrenaline pumping through you as you tried to scream, but his hand muffled you too well. the panic clawed at you. it felt like your chest was closing in as your brain scrambled for any possible escape. you should've paid more attention when you'd noticed the figure lurking on the corner earlier. you should've called will. but now, it was too late.
then, the sound of a thwip sliced through the air, so sudden, so sharp that your pulse stuttered. your attacker grunted, lifting off the ground. you caught a flash of red and blue -- a blur of motion -- and before you could register it, your attacker was pinned against the brick wall by a strand of webbing. he quickly took you to the next alleyway, keeping you far away from the man who attacked you.
your breath hitched, your head spinning with disbelief. you hadn't processed the situation before, but now? the realisation hit you like a ton of bricks.
then you heard it. that voice. a little muffled but still undeniably familiar. confirmation that your predictions were right. "are you okay?"
no. there's no way. it can't be will.
your mind froze. his voice. you knew that voice, there was no mistaking it. it was him standing in front of you.
will...spiderman?
the pieces started to click in your brain so quickly that you nearly stumbled backward. your first instinct was to speak, to shout his name, but the realisation of it all was too much, and too fast.
the figure in front of you, who had easily dismantled your attacker with a flick of his wrist, turned toward you. he was calm, collected, scanning you for any injuries with an intense focus you'd seen in him before. the same focus that had always made you feel safe when he was around. but this was different. this was surreal.
he could see the way you were piecing things together. without you realising, you whispered his name under your breath, and he heard the way you said "will..." the moment he spoke.
he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "i know, this is...a lot to take in."
yeah, no kidding.
you blinked, your mind struggling to find the right words. how long had he been doing this? the late nights, the disappearances, the way he's always seemed to show up at just the right moment. and now, here he was -- spiderman.
you didn't know what to say, so you just whispered his name again, like that would make everything clearer. "will?" his face softened in response.
his eyes searched yours, a mix of apology and fear coursing through him. "i didn't want to keep this from you. i-" he stopped himself, taking a deep breath. "i didn't know how to tell you. and i wasn't sure if you'd even want to be with me if you knew the truth. i didn't want to drag you into this crazy life."
you shook your head, still stunned by the wave of emotions flooding your chest. "i don't know what to think right now." your voice trembled slightly, and you could feel the heaviness of the moment weigh on you. but one thing was certain: you needed answers. "how long have you been doing this?"
he sighed, his gaze dropping to the ground. "a while. a long while. but i didn't want you to get hurt because of me. i thought it would be easier to just...not tell you." his voice wavered, a subtle crack in the otherwise confident tone. "but now i'm standing here, and i'm not sure what to do."
there it was. the vulnerability in his words. the side of him you hadn't seen before until now. he was spiderman, but he was still will. and in that moment, it wasn't just about the suit or the secret identity. it was about him being honest with you, even if it meant laying himself bare.
but just as you were about to speak, he took a small step back, the tension in his posture obvious. his eyes darted away, almost as though he was bracing himself for something.
"i'm sorry," he muttered, looking at the ground. "i really thought you'd want to end things after all this."
end things?
your heart sank at the thought. but before you could speak, he turned away, his hand reaching for his web shooter. the fear of rejection was too much for him to bear. you could see it in the way his shoulders were hunched, the way his movements were almost robotic.
he shot a web, preparing to swing away.
"no. will-" you breathed, your heart pounding as your rushed to him, desperation clawing at your chest. "don't leave."
he froze, caught in the act of launching himself into the air, he was now hanging upside down to speak to you. "i...i thought you'd want some space. i didn't want to-'
"no," you interrupted, your voice more confident now, the shock beginning to wear off as something else took its place. "i don't need space. i just-" you faltered for a second, the weight of it all pressing on your chest. "i just need you to stop running."
will hesitated, looking over his shoulder at you. there was that familiar vulnerability in his eyes again. "are you sure?"
you nodded, the tension in your body slowly fading, replaced by something more raw. "i'm sure. but if you leave now...i don't know if i'll ever forgive you."
will's expression softened, his eyes meeting yours in that vulnerable moment. but just as he was about to speak again, something inside you shifted. without thinking, you reached up, your hands trembling slightly as you tugged at the bottom of his mask.
he didn't stop you. you couldn't see, but his eyes widened slightly in surprise, but he didn't pull away. you pulled it just far enough to reveal his lips, your breath catching as you realised just how close you were to him, and without a second thought, you leaned in.
you kissed him soft at first, but then deeper and more urgent. this wasn't just about the kiss -- it was about everything that had been left unsaid, about the realisation that you wanted him, all of him, even the parts he tried to hide from you. and the moment you did, you felt it -- the weight of it all disappearing in the kiss, replaced by something lighter, something that felt more real than anything.
but as you pulled back, the world shifted.
will spun around, and before you could react, he was standing right side up in front of you again, holding onto you as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
"so...still up for that date? i kinda owe you one."
you smiled, shaking your head slightly, your hand holding onto his arm. "definitely."
