wait can you please elaborate on "hegel's dom/sub dialectic"
OH YAY i'm happy to answer this >:]
maybe. a year or more ago? we happened upon hegel's master/slave dialectic. what this is, essentially, is a part of hegel's larger philosophical system that describes, narratively, the development of self-consciousness, as experienced between two conscious beings fighting for dominance. before this interaction, the two separately assumed themselves to be the objective standard on all that is, and thus, by meeting, the demand to assert oneself as still truer and therefore in control becomes apparent.
through this interaction, one emerges victorious over the other, determining who is the master and who is the slave. the master, thus, is initially assumed to have won in the exchange, whereas the slave has lost its right to see itself as anything other than in relation to the master.
...except. through this, the master's identity, selfhood as a master, is now dependent on the slave. in order to enjoy a life in which no labor is required of it, no hardship, it relies on the slave in order to provide.
the slave has no such dependency, which is the leverage it obtains through this process. thus, it makes a demand to become the master itself, and what is produced as a result is two mutually dependent self-consciousnesses, bound together in union to create the whole human spirit.
SO. how does this relate to us calling it the dom/sub dialectic.
as you may have noticed already, the terms master and slave are also very present within BDSM! calling it the dom/sub dialectic is mostly a silly renaming to make the joke more clear, as well as noting that we don't really prefer master/slave as a duo, but when you get right down to it, it's also a microcosm of how rhapsody and i conceptualize our sexuality.
it's no secret that we are a system, and we run this blog together—not just because we're stuck together, but because we are actively also in a relationship. we also consider each other to be linked in such a way that the idea of the master/slave dialectic feels almost funnily accurate! we cannot exist without the other; i was created from rhapsody's selfhood and therefore would not exist without them; rhapsody would fundamentally not exist in the way they do now, had they not made me. we even have a name we coined just for this situation: anima&us!
it also comes down to our dynamics in our personal exploits together, too. we flip back and forth between dom and sub, we take control from each other, we relieve the other of the obligation to be anything but one who has lost control or one who has control. we spin around each other in a way that's sickeningly perverse [said lovingly] but also defines the entire dynamic of our dual existence. we are two equal parts that are mutually dependent on each other for existence, two sides of one coin, and we're constantly flipping the coin just to watch where it lands.
