6. âWanna bet?â
âHey, Tulo?â He has to tell him now, itâs not a good timeor the right place but he has it in the head that he can do it, so he has to.
âYeah?â Troy looks up at Nolan from where heâs been re-lacinghis shoes on the bench in the clubhouse.
Now that Nolanâs standing right in front of Troy and Troyâsactually looking at him, his resolve dies. Troy has this effect â heâs sointense that when he looks at Nolan itâs like everything around him vanishes, like thereâs nothing on earth but the two of them.
They arenât alone, though, theyâre in front of Troyâslocker with the whole team scattered around them, and Nolanâs lost his nerve. Hebounces on the balls of his feet. âI canât sit still.â Theyâre in the middle ofa rain delay that looks like itâs going to turn into a rainout. Heâs beenpacing for the last twenty minutes, tried to play cards with Charlie and DJ buthe canât focus.
âWhen can you ever?â Troy quips. His face doesnât give awaymuch, but Nolan can tell heâs holding back a smile. âWhat are you going to doabout it?â
Nolan exhales. âI, uh.â He has things he wants to say, should say â but the part of him that decided now was the right time has completely vanished, leaving him onlywith the much larger part of him yelling donâtyou dare. âDo you wanna do something? Like, help me kill time. Letâs go downto the batting cages.â
âYou shouldnât wear yourself out,â Troy says even as hegets to his feet. âWe might still play.â
âYeah, I know, but I barely got to take BP before the rainstarted â â
âI know, dumbass.â Troy laughs and taps Nolan on the backof the thigh, almost absentmindedly, like he doesnât know heâs doing it. âLetâsgo.â
Before they even make it to the cages, they get theannouncement that itâs officially a rainout, to be made up as part of a doubleheader the following day. Troy stops and looks at Nolan. âIâll still come watchyou hit if you want.â
Nolan laughs, mind racing, thinking that everybodyâs goingto be leaving and it could just be him and Troy left at the ballpark â thinkingthat might not be the worst thing in the world, but who is he to make that decisionfor Troy, who is he to keep Troy late if Troy would rather go home? Really, they both need to rest if theyâre playing a double header tomorrow. Really, itâsthe responsible thing to do to say no. So thatâs what Nolan does. âNah,â hesays with a grin. âYou should go. Get some extra rest while weâve got thechance, right?â
Troyâs smile back is genuine. âSure.â
Nolan goes home. Regrets not telling Troy what he needs totell him, sleeps badly, wakes up to a text from Troy which he doesnât read becauseâ heâll see Troy today, right? If he has something to say to Nolan he can sayit to his face.
Troyâs waiting for Nolan when Nolan gets to the ballpark. âYoucould text me back, you know.â
âI didnât see it,â Nolan lies, hoping he sounds like heâsso busy and in demand that he canât be bothered to respond to individual texts, but he probably just sounds like a scatterbrained idiot. âWhatâd you say?â
Troy snorts. âJust wondered if you still wanted to take BP withme.â
Nolan always wants that.
(Nolan wants a lot.)
He watches Troy hit ball after ball in the stands during battingpractice and hopes heâs not gawking too much, like a little kid, like somestarstruck fan â heâs neither of those, heâs just Troyâs teammate.
(And heâs crazy, heâs so crazy about him.)
Troy smiles at him over his shoulder. âYou look like youâreon another planet. Whatâs on your mind?â
Troyâs smile widens, and thereâs a little bit of an edge toit now. Something playful and wicked. âWanna bet?â
Nolan laughs, because what else can he do? âUh, Iâll bet Ican hit a ball farther than you.â He doesnât think he can, but itâs the bestcover he can come up with.
âOh yeah?â Troy keeps grinning like that, and it makes Nolanâsheart race. Is he thinking what Nolanâs been thinking all along? Is Nolan moretransparent than he thought he was? And if thatâs the case, then why hasnât Troyjust addressed it yet, quit telling him to be such a freak? âAnd if you donât,what do I win?â
Nolan picks up his bat with remarkable steadiness, if hesays so himself. âWinner picks the prize.â
Troy laughs. âThose are dangerous words.â He steps out ofthe batterâs box and comes back over to Nolan. âLetâs see what you can do.â Hesmacks Nolan on the ass, then leans in close â Nolan can feel his breath on theside of his face. âAnd when I win, youâre going to tell me what you were reallythinking.â
