Black Friday?
I'm not feeling very much like spending a bunch of money today. I mean I purchased something last night because the price was fantastic and 2yrs ago when I was all ready to make a big purchase I found a deal on something the day before and thought... this will go UP tomorrow instead of getting better. Sure enough on Black Friday, my wife's laptop went up $70.00! So I really don't wait for the sales anymore. I know what things cost normally, I'm not really prone to impulse buying. Especially if it's an item of any value I've been stalking it for months so I know exactly what they cost.
So what's a guy to do with the day off and a massive headache from the stupid weather? Clean LP's and rip them to MP3 LOL. I washed my Rolling Stones Hot Rocks 1964-1972 and wow... I'm so glad I did! I thought this set sounded pretty good the other day when I listened to it. When I rip an LP I listen through my Sennheiser HD600's and thought what the heck, lets wash this before ripping... MAJOR improvement!
I don't have a super cool RCM (Record Cleaning Machine), I'm hoping that changes soon... I have a Spin Clean that does a decent job, but is a bit labor intensive, but it gets the job done. PS. Don't waste your time buying Super S3cr3t Record Cleaning Solution No.9 from (insert retailer of choice here), DIY some. I've tried a number of different solutions, when you figure 16oz of someone's special brew could set you back as much as $49.00 it's infinitely cheaper to just make it yourself. Like I said, I've tried a dozen different recipes, here is my current recipe and personally, it kicks ass. I'm listening to a wicked clean LP right now that had significant surface noise before cleaning. I mean it was listenable too, and I DID clean it once upon a time when I first picked it up, but after today's cleaning... yeah totally worth the effort especially since I'm ripping it. the Spin Clean holds 3 cups of water, so that's how I mix it;
1 cup distilled water1 cup isopropyl alcohol 1 cup distilled white CLEANING GRADE vinegar (6% acid) 1.5oz Lysol All Purpose 4in1 cleaner 1-2 drops of Dawn dish-washing detergent or PhotoFlo or other wetting agent.
If you can't find the Cleaning Grade Vinegar regular white will work, it's just 5% acid which will probably work just as well. Since I can get a gallon of the Cleaning Grade stuff it made more sense. How much does this mix cost me per batch? Well... Just eyeballing it, about $3.00 it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying some premix where you don't know for sure if it's going to clean well. This mix WILL clean the junk off your LP's, please do take care to avoid getting it on the label area because prolonged exposure will take it right off! If you get it wet, finish cleaning it, dry that off with a microfiber clothe and allow to air dry 10-20min and it will be fine, just don't rub it.
After I get done editing tracks and such I'll post a sample or two ;)
