SPINACH POLLEN. Just doing my part, and before the temps reach above 75 degrees in the hoop house (thanks for that tip, @seedlibrary). #everyday #spinachpollen #spinaciaoleracea #spinach #sexualreproduction #seedsaving #winterspinathaldenstein
First seed harvest of the year! Winterspinat Haldenstein is a Swiss heirloom winter spinach from Haldenstein, where it has been grown since before the First World War. It has pointy seeds instead of the more common rounded ones. Several plants were fully dry today, but the majority stand tall and green, and so will be harvested later. My seed came from William Woys Weaver, and this history from Solstice Seeds. #winterspinathaldenstein #spinaciaoleracea

Spinach plants are mostly dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants, except for occasional individuals that are both. This here is a female (I think) Winterspinat Haldenstein plant that is going to flower after several months in the hoop house. Soon, it will develop pointed seeds. Haldenstein is the Swiss town where this variety has been grown by nearly all who live there since before WWI. The seeds were given to me by William Woys Weaver. #winterspinathaldenstein #spinaciaoleracea #dioecious #monoecious #spinachflower #swissheirloom (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)
Winterspinat Haldenstein (Spinacia oleracea) germinating in the last few days of 2016! I planted this Swiss heirloom in a high tunnel under low tunnels and it is truly living up to its reputation as a winter spinach. I've grown it for the last three or four years for delicious early spring time eating. It is named after the town where it has been grown by nearly all who live there since before WWI. Thanks to Solstice Seeds for this history, and William Woys Weaver for these doubly pointy (not rounded) seeds. #winterspinat #winterspinathaldenstein #prospecierara #solsticeseeds #spinaciaoleracea #roughwoodseedcollection (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)
