Went out to see a rare orchid (Spiranthes diuvialis) with my mom and got a new moth and beetle out of the walk!

The moth is Cisseps fulvicollis, which is a type of tiger moth! They’re widely distributed in the eastern US I am honestly surprised I didn’t have this one yet.

The beetle is Disonycha alternata, which is a species of leaf beetle. They’re more sparsely scattered in the eastern and western US.

In this regular series all H-el-ical// songs from the limited albums (only available at the live venue and through mail order) will be discussed. The last episode aired back in December 2020 and now they are finally picking up the series again and starting with the 「Blooming」Edition. Hikaru and the composer Hideyuki Gushimiyagi are talking about the song production and share some insight. Can I just say that I love Hikaru’s t-shirt. She always keeps the really cool altered versions of her merch tshirts for herself. It’s a shame she doesn’t sell them as well T_T The shirt Gushi-kun wears is a regular design and Hikaru assumes many of us will own it [Yup, you are right about that XD].

Spiranthes was the first song from the “Blooming” album to be released on YouTube, around summer last year. For Hikaru and many listeners it has strong summer vibes but for Gushi, it is mostly a very heartrending song and not so much related to anything seasonal. Hikaru agrees that it is a very sad song so she came up with this story of two people who cross paths, feel a connection but never properly stay together. When she writes lyrics, Hikaru draws a lot from her own experience and that’s what she also did here. The song is about a fleeting yet intense summer friendship between youths rather than a romantic love (at least in Hikaru’s mind). For some reason she associates summer with feelings of friendship and winter with feelings of love.

Her recent YouTube songs include English and Chinese translations of the lyrics so this time Chinese Translator cho choさん is doing the questionnaire.

What was your impression when you first heard the song? When they first listened to the demo tape (just the melody) they thought it sounded like the ending theme of a romance anime. But then with Hikaru’s lyrics added to the melody there was a strong sense of warmth radiating from the song. Gushi says that for him the answer “love anime ending” couldn’t be further off XD But Hikaru understands why people might get those vibes.

Any difficulties? The Japanese lyrics don’t really differentiate between first-person and second-person-view so it was difficult to figure out who was the narrator in the song. Hikaru says that she rarely uses a particular point of view. She wants to keep it as vague as possible so many people can relate to the lyrics. But she realises it is super hard to translate that sort of writing style into other languages because most languages heavily rely on the presence of a subject and pronouns

Anything you want the listeners to pay attention to when it comes to this song? They just want everyone to pay close attention to the world that is created within Hikaru’s lyrics.

A bit of seasonal color pops along the Tygart Valley River at Valley Falls State Park. Among the autumn treasures I discovered along river’s boulder-strewn bank were winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata) and Appalachian ladies’ tresses (Spiranthes arcisepala).
