Conceptual "Ecstacy of Faust", unlike the the other sexual/lust concepts of Faust, this one was inspired by the the German poet, Chamisso (1781-1838) where it is truth and knowledge that is the source of Faust's desires, in line with Emanuel Kant's philosophical ideas of the time. Chamisso uses his poem to illustrate Kant's deep philosophic implication that it is truly impossible for human beings to know reality beyond the apparent world. "No spirit good art thou, liar, avaunt! I turn away from thee, I follow HIM. Tis knowledge I desire, wisdom and truth."
