Wait, hold on. So with the last post I reblogged, I got to thinking that maybe Edith didn’t just subconsciously observe the closeness of Jim and Spock’s relationship. What if she knew how they felt, and so her comments about Spock being by Jim’s side was 1930s code for acknowledging they were in love?
But Jim didn’t know this, and he was still in denial about his feelings for Spock? So when he asked Edith out, he really thought they were dating.
And from her perspective, she thought Jim was asking her out to be his beard. Because otherwise the fact that they were rooming together and spending all their time together, folks would get suspicious. She she got to have a handsome man take her out and kiss her and not have to worry about it interfering with her work that she’s devoted her life to, because it was all an act.
So Edith thinks she’s bearding for them, and Jim thinks he’s dating her, and Spock is just over here compartmentalizing his feelings while he works on this machine that he conveniently leaves on the second bed so that they have to share the other one.
