"It ... it's negative." You sighed, sitting on the corner of the tub with your husband in the doorway. His hand running through his head in frustration. You wanted to keep looking at the test in hopes another line would emerge.
His eyes snapped to you, glossy with tears. "It's because you're not eating enough." He said. "A peanut and water is not a real meal. It's that fucking modeling job, I told you this was never a good idea."
"I don't give a shit what that doctor said!" He hollered, punching the bathroom wall and leaving a dent. "We've been trying for a goddamn year and you keep disappointing me. Don't you want this baby?"
You threw the test in the trash. Standing up and walking towards your husband, an instinctive hand on your flat stomach. "How could you say that, Jack. Of course I do." You wiped away a tear, anger emerging. "It takes two to do this, you may not care what the doctor said but she was right. Your sperm count is low and you refuse to take the medicine, don't blame this on me. You only disappoint yourself."
He stood in the doorway, stunned and frustrated, nothing to keep you around seemed to be working. Now, here you were insulting his manhood. You walked past him in efforts to go to bed, to try and forget this whole night. In a snap your head was jerked back, hair wrapped around your husbands fist as he threw you to the ground.
Your eyes shot open, heart beating quickly as you looked around you. The dream you had, had thrown you off of your morning routine. Jack was still sound asleep next to you, about to wake at any moment to get ready for work. You were already behind on starting coffee and breakfast.
A loving housewife is who you are.
It was all that you would ever be.
“I’m kind of jealous of the Victory Project.” You mumbled, snacking on a piece of bacon as you put a sandwich in Jack’s lunchbox. He stood at the kitchen island with a smirk on his face, sipping the last of his coffee.
He chuckled. “Is that so?” His British accent jumping out.
“It is.” You nodded, turning on your heeled house shoes. “They take you away from me all day when lord knows that I’d love nothing more than to be in bed with you from dawn till nightfall.” You walked closer to him, opening up his white button down that you had draped over your body. “I know you miss this while playing with your big boy toys.”
“It’s the sacrifice I have to make.” He pulled your body closer, kissing you heavily. “Everything I do, I do for us, Y/N. To give you everything you’ve ever wanted. Everything you deserve.” He pulled away, smiling until he saw the time on his watch. He kissed your temple softly. “I’m going to be late.”
You watched Jack walk out of the door, the smell of his cologne wafting through the home. You knew the next few hours the house would smell like him and he wouldn’t feel like a missing presence from your home. You turned, seeing his black lunchbox sitting on the kitchen counter. Quickly you grabbed it and ran outside, being met with all the other wives who waved off their husbands.
“Jack!” You called out, lifting up his lunch and smiling. “Can’t have you out there on an empty stomach can we?” You grabbed his chin, kissing him again before he waved you off.
This was how every morning seemed to start.
You were conditioned to love this state of your life. Living next to your husbands friends and co-workers, having Tupperware parties and exchanging recipes with their wives, ballet classes every Tuesday and Thursday, all of your husbands would leave for work and return at the same time. A hot meal would be waiting for them on the dining room table with a glass of scotch.
For as long as you could remember, life like this seemed normal for you and your husband, Jack. Sure, you had mental breakdowns from the stress of being the wife of a successful man. You saw things, terrible and unspeakable things that were impossible. It was normal, Doctor Collins told you it happens to women all the time under immense stress. Nothing that a happy little pill couldn't fix. Even through the stress and mental issues, you had never imagined of breaking out of this pattern of living or dreamt that there was something more to fulfill your life.
Not until you and Jack started trying for a family.
You expected the sex to feel the same, the feelings of pleasure to hit your body so roughly and passionately until you unraveled. For a while things didn't change. Bunny told you that the first time she and her husband, Dean, began trying, she fell pregnant. You figured it would be that easy of a process for you until three months passed and still there was no baby. Jack's softness never dwindled, even when you could see the disappointment and frustration in his eyes. It made you feel terribly. Jack never asked much of you and this was the one thing he truly wanted. Why couldn’t you get pregnant for him?
"Please don't be mad at me." You begged him one night, tears in your eyes as you showed him another negative test. He was silent, eyes drinking you in. "Jack, honey, please."
He stood up from the bed, his hands wrapping cupping your cheeks. "Don't you want a family? A family with me, Y/N?" He said lowly.
You blinked, the words oddly familiar to the eerie dreams you began to have. "O-Of course." You hiccuped, tears streaming down your face. "I can't control this. Maybe it's a sign that right now isn't the time?"
Jack's grip on your face steadily began to tighten. "Are you ... are you saying this is my fault that we can't have a baby?"
"Of course not, Darling." You choked out, trying to break free from his grasp. “You’re hurting me.”
He let go of you, walking away and returning back to the bed. Jack sat down with his head in his hands, his left leg shaking in aggravation. You could hear him muttering something under his breath over and over. You stepped closer to your husband in efforts to comfort him when his words catch you off guard.
"Things were supposed to be different this time." Jack slipped, his eyes widening instantly when he knows you heard him. His eyes shot up at you and you instantly tried to convince him that you heard nothing.
You plastered on a fake smile. "How about I go fix us some dessert, hmm? My homemade brownies always make us feel better, don't they honey?" You planted a kiss onto his head and sharply turned to go to the kitchen.
Jack was left to his devices in your shared bedroom, his thoughts running rampant as everything he had worked so hard and sacrificed for was turning to shit. You could hear him descend the few steps of your home. You were trying to ignore how uneasy he made you feel and focus on the brownie batter in front of you.
"Do you want to lick the---?" You began to turn your head, only to be yanked by your hair and thrown into your husbands chest.
A cloth was held over your mouth and nose, your body screaming inside for you to fight but Jack was too strong. First your legs went limp, his body supporting yours from instantly falling to the floor. Then your breathing staggered. And finally your eyes fluttered shut as if you were simply exhausted.
Nothing about this feeling felt like exhaustion. There was a blinding flash before your body jolted awake. Your heart felt as if it was going to burst out of your chest, your nervous system going into hyper drive. You heaved, trying to catch a sliver of fresh air as your lungs craved it. The world around you was slowing coming into focus, eyes darting wildly as you took in your surroundings.
You could feel a sense of pressure on your temples and something silver covering the corners of your eyes. You tried touching the side of your head, finding your arms tied and bound in leather to the dingy bed you laid on. That is when you saw the man laying beside you. Your body prepared you to scream but you halted, shaky breaths becoming more rampant. This man was a stranger. His hair was greasy and long, the clothes he wore looked so out of the norm for what you were used to, so improper. He wasn't clean shaven, but, even through the scruff you could see his features.
You could see that he looked like your Jack. Some sort of futuristic and jumbled together version of your husband. The man that frequented those creepy dreams that occupied your mind at night.
Your stomach lurched, you turned your head way from him, facing the ceiling of the dark and desolate space you were in. Where the hell were you? When were you?
"Oh fuck off, Jack!" You hollered at your husband. "How dare you come to my fitting and embarrass me like that? I almost lost my job!" You pointed an angry finger at him, watching him sit down at the dining room table as if he had done nothing wrong.
His facial expression was very jaded and cold. He pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose, sniffling before turning to you. Pure hatred and disdain in his eyes. "You're lucky I didn't drag you out of there." He said lowly. "I just wanted to support you, make sure you were safe, but you had to disrespect me with that excuse of a man. Are you fucking him now?"
"Jack, I can't fucking believe you." You chuckled in disbelief. "You're the one not trusting me? After everything that you did ... I'm the bad guy in this marriage? You were the one stumbling in at four in the morning smelling like cheap perfume. Leaving your hotel receipts everywhere for me to find. Condom wrappers in your pocket knowing that I do your damn laundry! Blaming me that we couldn't have a baby!” You stepped closer to him, mouth screwed into a frown as you looked around your home. Trying to take in the fact that this was your life. This is what you came home to every night.
He was quiet like always, just letting you yell and ignore everything you said once you were finished. “Did you ever think it's because you use me as a punching bag when shit doesn't go your way?" You hollered, screaming in his face as he stared at you with that deer in headlights look he loved to use. If he really was even listening to you. "You lost your job at the University? I was target practice. I can't get pregnant? Not only do you belittle me but you batter and bruise me. You cheated on me with multiple women and what happened to me? I had a black eye and couldn't work for weeks. I made a mistake taking you back."
Your husband narrowed his brows. "What the hell does that mean, Y/N."
"It means..." You took a deep breath, trying to muster your strength, trying to not be fearful of Jack anymore. "It means that I want a divorce. You are not the man that I married and clearly you don't trust me. We're done and have been for a long time...and you know that too." You tried walking past him, his arm grabbing yours tightly, leaving an imprint on your forearm.
Jack took his glasses off, stepping closer to you. "You think I'm going to just let you walk away from me? From us? What about everything we planned to build together?" He screamed in your face, raising a hand to strike you. You had been studying his movements for years. You knew every tactic he liked to use, every hit, how he liked to use the back of his hand more than his palm, how he enjoyed seeing you in pain. Your tears were the antidote to fix his bruised ego.
You grabbed his arm roughly. "I'm not going to allow you to keep hurting me. You got what you wanted, you lost me."
Tears brimmed your eyes as the dreams began to flood your brain. Everything in you was screaming for you to escape, you had to leave this futuristic strange place you were being held in. Your restraint on your right wrist was loosened a bit, clearly Jack was in a rush to tie you down and had done so sloppily. Somehow you had managed to wriggle your wrist out and had one arm free. Your other arm was stuck with an IV needle, clearly poked and prodded multiple times. The bruises around the needle were almost black and felt numb.
Quickly and quietly you ripped the needle from your arm, feeing yourself from the restraint. The silver colored glasses followed, ripping the neuron needles from your temples. Jack hadn't moved next to you. His consciousness was still locked into the simulation. Doing whatever he wanted with the doting housewife version of you. Your legs felt weak, clearly you hadn't been using them in a long time. Somehow you had managed to drag yourself to the long mirror in the bedroom, taking in your appearance and shedding tears.
Bruises littered your body, your arms, legs, your stomach. Your hair was outgrown, messy standing all over your head. Whatever was happening to you while you were unconscious, you clearly weren't taken care of. You took a quick look behind you, seeing that he was still stuck in the simulation.
You tried making your way to the bedroom door, a keypad glowing bright blue with a six digit code. You took a step closer, your foot stuck to a piece of paper. You grabbed it delicately, your eyes focusing on the black lettering on the dingy grey sheets. It was a newspaper with the year showing 2050.
"BELOVED MODEL Y/N CHAMBERS PASSED AWAY IN FATAL CAR ACCIDENT, SHE IS SURVIVED BY EX HUSBAND JACK CHAMBERS."
Your eyes widened, you could feel a looming darkness surrounding you. You took a glance at yourself in the mirror. Jack was now awake from the simulation. His tall and eerie figure standing right behind you, wide awake from the reality he created for you two. You let out a blood curdling scream before his strong arms wrapped around your body. The world and your freedom fading away once more.
"Jack?" Your eyes fluttered open. Your body felt weak, there were cuts and scrapes covering your body. "J-Jack, what happened?" You reached to touch your head, feeling your arms tied to the bed with leather restraints. "What's going on?"
Your ex-husband turned around. His hair thrown into a messy bun away from his face. A smile was written on his lips, it looked genuine, it was the same smile he had on your wedding day. "Our lives are going to change for the better, my love." You looked down at his hands, a pair of glasses rested in them and they appeared to be metal. "I began to lose faith in getting you back. You had moved on and left me behind, became successful." He climbed onto the bed, placing the glasses next to you. His body towered over yours and you began to hyperventilate. "I could handle all of those things because I still had faith in you and I, even though you gave up. But this," He pointed to your stomach. "this was my last fucking straw. I couldn't let you have a baby with him. I refused to let him have the life that I deserve."
"I-I'm not pregnant, Jack." You stuttered. Not even sure what to say to get you out of this situation. "Just please let me go so we can talk about this okay? We can get you some help, Jack, I want to help you."
Your ex-husband smiled, kissing your forehead, his face dropping instantly before he spoke again. "The Victory Project is all the help I need." He straddled you, grabbing the silver glasses again and turning them on. "I can take us to a place that is simpler, somewhere we can start again and be happy together." He placed the glasses over your eyes. "This will hurt but you won't remember the pain." The glasses pinched into your temples, needles locking into your neural consciousness as it began to alter.
"Don't worry, Darling." Jack whispered in your ear. "I'll take care of everything."
