honestly I think if there’s a “pandemic gender identity crisis” it’s because a lot of people are simply Not Being Perceived by the groups of classmates/coworkers they’re used to, so they’re asking themselves which aspects of Gender Presentation actually matter to them if no one else is looking, and why they bother with the other ones, and what is gender, anyway?

And then they’re nonbinary.

The morning of January 20, 2021, a White House usher comes to Trump and says, “Mr. President, your car is ready.”

Trump does what he usually does when he hears something he doesn’t want to hear. Tantrum, threats, paranoid rants, whatever. Into every pause, the usher repeats, “Yes, sir. Your car is ready, sir.”

Trump eventually winds down. The usher repeats again, “Your car is ready, sir,” and finally, Trump gets in the car. He gets in alone. Melania went to New York for Christmas and hasn’t returned. Ivanka and Jared left the country first week of January to touch base with some of their overseas interests. They said they’d be back for the Inauguration but for some reason they’re still in Dubai.

The presidential motorcade has gotten maybe two blocks toward the Mall when Trump tells the driver to take him to the airport.

The driver does.

Trump buys a ticket to Dubai and goes to the rich people lounge to wait for his flight.

At noon precisely, four NYPD officers invade the rich people lounge. They hand the Secret Service people a warrant. Tish James requires Trump’s presence in New York. The Secret Service people are relieved.

The NYPD say they can escort Trump as is, or they can cuff him. His choice. And they can gag him, too, if he insists.

He insists.

The press is at the mall covering Trump’s no-show at the Inauguration, but a collection of fellow travelers document every step as he’s frog marched through the airport.

Next day, the news that the outgoing president was apprehended trying to leave the country and slept last night in the Tombs gives the Women’s Marches special piquancy.

Two weeks later, Trump meets Jeffrey Epstein’s fate.
