just realized i have been talking about the spite book and none of y'all know my writing level, i have a writing blog (@nightowlwriting) but also what if i participated (late) in the max ride prompt week and wrote for each day??

I'm back on my spite book bullshit and this story has developed so much in my mind and I think I'm starting to finally get a plan together and I'm tempted to spend Nanowrimo writing/developing it

Also I still can't decide whether I want it to be a written novel or a graphic novel. I do feel it would work better as a graphic novel tho.

hi yes these are my CHILDREN (18, 15, 15, 12, 12) and i love them and i apologize in advance for what my plot is going to do to them

also i am simply not ready to reveal information about them (because i am saving that for the podcast) but i will give you their pronouns: they/them, he/him, she/her, he/him, they/them

also this particular picrew only had 1 natural hair option and about 5 skin tones so this isn't even their final form

Not With A Bang, But With A Whimper Day 7 - Free Space: Dove as she was originally created: as a Marvel OC to nurture the Flock the way that they deserve #maxride hc prompt week

The first time that Dove hears of Max, she is in her kitchen with Steve. The file has come to her, first, because of her experience with the Lab and the Wolfmen. With Doctor Batchelder. With growing up in a cage with wings. She reads the files of the rest of the kids, but Max’s file is so, so close to home.

In a lot of ways, they are the same. So Dove weeps. She stands in front of the island where she had been making breakfast for her lover and weeps. Steve is at her side in a second, ducking around her wings as they shake and react to her emotions, but he cannot do anything. Dove thinks he knows this because after he sees the file in front of her, he just pastes himself to her back, wraps his strong arms around her waist, and tucks his face into the crook of her neck whilst she cries into her hands.

That’s what she likes about him. He knows what it’s like to be a lab experiment, even if he asked for it. To be poked, and proceed, and have your core DNA changed. Maybe that’s what attracted them in the first, place, but it doesn’t matter. Because there are six kids about to be in Dove’s care, and she has to figure out how to become a mother without losing Steve. When he asked her out, she was not a mother.

But she will choose Max and her Flock over having a lover any day of the week. (A deeper exploration would probably expose a nerve somewhere in her psyche - Dove didn’t have anyone to teach her how to live so she had to figure it out on her own. If she can be the person that she needed for these children, her life will have been worth it.) It’s not until later that night she sends the confirmation email; long after she had cried and then gone on with her day. When Dove hits send, she’s sitting on the edge of her bed and Steve is shivering behind her, still asleep.

If she doesn’t lay back down and cover him with one of her thick, warm wings he’ll wake up. She hasn’t decided whether or not she wants him to wake up and comfort her again. Will it be more painful to lose him now, or when she devotes her life to raising six children and helping them heal from deeply ingrained trauma? There is so much that they have to learn about the way the world works, about themselves. They have to learn about who they are without the threat of Wolfmen, and without Scientists, and without cages surrounding them for most of the day unless they are being experimented on. Dove will have to earn their trust - which means starting with Max. The files have said that she is the leader of the Flock, so it makes sense that she will not let Dove anywhere near the others until Dove is proven worthy.

She lays back down, laying her wing gently across Steve’s bareback, and tries to sleep. She cries silently and hopes that she is worthy. She wants to be worthy. The kids deserve a mother, and if Dove is not it, she will do everything in her power to find someone who is.

Day 5 - Original Characters (Dove)

Dove tries to keep a level head. They pride themselves on that, really. They’re the oldest, the one that’s been a protector, a friend, a mentor, a mother. They’ve always been level-headed and that’s been a source of self-love.

Sometimes, even the most rational person breaks.

It’s a fact of life. There’s always a breaking point, and Dove has just hit theirs. It is so hard to be the person in charge, even if there’s now someone older than them - but they’re not here. It’s just Dove, and their kids, and there is so much blood. They know that they have to think, but it’s so hard. Their kids are begging for help, saying Mommy and it hurts and please help him, please.

They’re so overwhelmed it’s hard to think. They grab one of the kids, it’s hard to see who through the tears in their dark eyes, and instruct them to keep pressure on the wound while they go look for something to help. Then, Dove takes off. They’re high enough off the ground that they just have to step off the edge and unfurl their wings.

Dove waits until they’re a mile or two away before they crash-land in a clearing. The tears fall then, their chest heaving with grief and terror. Nothing like this has ever happened to any of the Fleet before, and they don’t know what to do. The arrow had probably shattered Blue’s bone, and the Fleet can’t afford to wait until it heals. He’ll bleed out if that happens. He’s only twelve.

They scramble for the satellite phone that Carter had given them, dialing the only phone number they know. The phone presses angrily against the tracking clip on their ear, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is getting help for Blue before he fucking dies. When Carter answers, his voice is clipped and he sounds bored and irritated at the same time.

“Please,” Dove gasps, their free hand curling against their chest as they cry, “Sir, you have to come to get us. Thirty-three was hit with an arrow, and its bone is shattered.”

Carter simply tsks. “Deadweight,” He says, voice tinny through the phone, “Either leave it or kill it, but take its wings and destroy them when it dies.” It feels like Dove’s stomach drops out through their body and they stutter for a second. The overwhelming grief and confusion scramble their brain but after a moment they’re back on track.

“Sir, Thirty-three is an integral part to the Fleet, we can’t-”

“What? Would you like me to fly out and rescue you? Fourteen, you know better. A waste of resources is-”

“-The downfall of us all.” Dove finishes Carter’s sentence and listens as he hangs up without any more discussion. They know that means that the case is closed, and punishment is surely in line for them when they arrive home. Dove drops the satellite phone and bends over, pressing their forehead against their knees and wrapping their wings around their body. Their only hope had been Carter, but he had just told them to kill Blue.

How could they kill their own child? How could he ask them to kill when they were only eighteen? Even this mission, the one that had sent them into the real world for the first time, was a track and trap mission. Not a hired hit. It was supposed to be no casualty mission, no blood on any of their hands.

Blue is only twelve. He’s scared, too, because he called Dove Mommy. He’d grown out of that long ago, opting for calling them by their name instead. They push themselves off of the ground, trying to straighten out their thoughts. They needed to do something and fast because if they didn’t then they’d get back to the place where they’d hidden out with their Fleet and find Blue dead.

Dove takes a running start and lifts into the air with only a few beats of their powerful wings. They’ll figure something out. They have to.

They always do.
