Splatoon's alphabet is phonetic. Just like latin, Cyrillic, and hangul (one letter = one sound). This means you can write most things using the splatoon alphabet and it will still make sense!

Tableturf cards have a unique 2D artstyle for the main and special weapon cards as well as all the character cards. Sub weapons, brands, Octarians and Salmonids (except for King Salmonids) only have cutouts of the 3D images instead of an extra artwork. But it seems like Nintendo did plan on at least the Octarians having 2D artwork, too. In version 1.0.0, the Octotrooper card had the 2D style. It later got replaced by a Fuzzy Octotrooper in 3D. Maybe they didn’t have time to make new artwork for all the cards? Who knows…
